We are very worried about out anemone.....it has stayed closed almost all day today, and this happens quite often. We have read that when an anemone dies, it can poison the entire tank, so we are just worried about that happening. We aren't quite sure what we need to look for. Thought I'd post some pics and see what ya'll think. Any thoughts would be very appreciated!!:)

It does not look good at all no doubt. Id say unfortunately its on its way out. What kind of anemone is it? BTAs and mini maxis are pretty much the only reef safe ones if they die. Others are pretty toxic

I mean if you can then get it out but it wont really hurt the tank

So he isn't poisonous to the tank if he dies in the tank? I just don't have the heart to take him out and kill him, just in case he is ok...but I also don't want him to kill everything else in my tank......

If its dead or dying get it out. Any anemone can be very harmful when it dies in a tank.

What are your water parameters? Sometimes they will close for a few days and then open when they are happy. Have you tried feeding?

Another worry i had was someone in my lfs told me to smell him becsuse when they are on their wsy out, they smell bad, since then i have and the past couple of days it smelled pretty bad comparing the first time i did, just really worry about the livestock i have in my tank..

Nems can be hard to keep they require excellent water conditions and lighting. Many times they are damaged when they have been removed from where they were attached. Hope he comes through for you.

to me that looks more like a stressed or defecating anemone. often times after a water change anemones can look like this, likewise after a big meal. i would not worry about this anemone poisoning your whole tank if it dies. but you will distinctly see parts of the anemone break apart and essentially "melt" when it is actually dying and decomposing. i wouldnt write it off just yet.

you say your water params are great....this can certainly be very subjective. are you using RODI water or tap water? for anemones, these parameters are what i keep the closest eye on:
alk
ca
mg
no3
salinity

I've been going thru the same thing for the past 6 months some days mine looks like that and some looks great how big is the anemone I would definitely would feed just to give a fighting chance.. How long have u had ur tank set up for? How big is it ?? Live rock??

Yes we have live rock, he was a gift to us from a friend.. I thought it was too early to have a nem for sure.. Tank is a lil over a month old now, but we have 2 and the other one is doing great, if anything he is huge now. He was 3" about.... He is gone now:( we are really sad about him. Our parameters are where they should be, salinity is 0.025, temp is 79 constant, salinity is constant.. We have thousands of pods in the tank... I just couldn't understand..

Thank you I hope so too the only thing I can think of is some days my tank is still raises ammonia and that's when it looks the worst... And it doesn't need to be too high either, the highest I've seen it is 0.25 something to look for the next time around

Such a delucate process...it doesnt take much for this ecosystem to get completely out of whack! I really hope yours does well!:)

Oh no Melissa! This just happened to me!
One of the more experienced reefers explained to me that it took her 3 years before she could keep a BTA! (btw sorry i havent gotten back to your message yet.. i keep getting distracted!)
Yes, when it does, it smells like rotting flesh. We lost ours 2 weeks ago, but took it out before anything bad could happen. I am so so so sorry! We were sure our tank was ready and got it right before joining this site. After doing research here, I thought we should have waited a few months but for a month, it was fine. Then, out of no where, it took a turn for the worst :-( apparently our tanks aren't cycled enough.
