Oh no Melissa! This just happened to me!
One of the more experienced reefers explained to me that it took her 3 years before she could keep a BTA! (btw sorry i havent gotten back to your message yet.. i keep getting distracted!)
Yes, when it does, it smells like rotting flesh. We lost ours 2 weeks ago, but took it out before anything bad could happen. I am so so so sorry! We were sure our tank was ready and got it right before joining this site. After doing research here, I thought we should have waited a few months but for a month, it was fine. Then, out of no where, it took a turn for the worst :-( apparently our tanks aren't cycled enough.
