I’ve bought xenia twice and it slowly withers and dies

Cal 420
Mag 1200
Alk 7

I have kenya tree anthelia birdsnest pocci gsp clove polyps digi

Tank has been up since last April

They are poor shippers and can be upset about high temps but that rules those out.

They do seem to suck down Nitates and people have even experimented with Xenia fuges.

Do you know your nitrate level?

How often do you do water changes?

What about salinity?

Oddly enough Xenia can be invasive or seem impossible.

Bet your nitrates are 0. It’s a weed in my tank. Not invasive but stalks get super tall. I have so many zoas my nitrates are always consistently 0-10 ppm. The Xenia seem to do fine when they’re above 5ppm and shrink below it.

I haven’t checked nitrates in a while and I changed water in July... but I upgraded to a 45 gallon cube with sump from a 29 gallon bio cube in December so I added some new water with my old water when I moved everything and salinity is 1.023

So you think my nitrates are low, why aren’t my other softies dying? How do I raise them?

I don’t know why it only effects Xenia. That’s my only guess however. My dad had tons of Xenia in his 120 and for some reason they all died off after years of being perfectly fine. Maybe they just do that sometimes. I would test them before trying anything. Easiest way to raise them is just to feed more. If you have tons of softies like me they’ll eat up most of the nitrates anyway. I feed a ton and my Zoa suck it all up.

Heck, I would be stark raving happy that xenia died. Too little nitrates? Too much light with that SPS?

raise salinity slowly to 1.026. You could top off with salt water for evaporation until 1.026.

Test nitrate.. you don’t want 0 with Xenia.

Do some sort of regular water change schedule... corals will benifit form some trace elements from the water change.

I run zero nitrates on any test kit and xenia grows like a weed.

You can find xenia posts all over the place. Some tanks it will not grow. I had such a tank in the 2000's...

Your best bet, trust me, just find a reasonable place to be with parameters, alk, etc, feed the fish well, and keep things stable. It will grow. It melts when changes occur. ... just saying...

If parameters are stable for a few months and you still cant keep it from melting. Just stop trying for a year.... try again then. It can be the most finicky or the most indestructible coral, i swear. But if its not growing and your parameters are stable, just take a break from it and try again later... its a "$5 barely know you" frag from anyone who has it locally... get a long polyp gonni to hold you over

I kid, I kid...
Also I’m 24 and I have been doing this since I was 11 plus I am in a power chair so I’m forced to do this hobby differently than most people. I’m a very easygoing person and you seem very friendly so that’s why I wanted to explain myself haha. Even shoot saltwater 20 feet up into the air out of a brute trash can? My parents weren’t very happy

The Xenia and Kenya in my tank are held in balance based on that fact....they grow very slowly, based on gobbling up any Nitrates... my Nem thanks them both for the water quality....
