I have an lps/softy 55gal running with 54 white/blue 1w LEDs. Have various lps and softies (as well as other leathers- a neon yellow sinularia being one of them) my lfs special ordered me a fiji that I'm planning to put in my last open spot in the tank- in a corner on the sand bed that receives very strong, yet indirect flow from an 800 gph powerhead, as I understand these corals like to get pounded with flow. Anyone have experience with these?

As with any coral, give it as much flow as you can without causing it to close up or damage it. It will be like pretty much any other leather, just prettier. :)

Yea I have a frogspawn a few inches up from the intended spot but is on the rock work and it seems to be loving the flow. I've never had an issue with leathers but I'm nervous because I hear these are tricky for whatever reason. Maybe it's because of the color??

I had a 8"+ Fiji yellow that would not show any polyp extension. I added a koralia pump blowing right on it and it was open within hours. I ended trading it though because my lighting turned it a ugly brown color. In its new tank it is a bright yellow again.

So it should be happy flow wise. Hoping my lights are sufficient... My sinularia is an electric yellow/green so I'm thinking it should be alright

Came in and looks good. I was expecting it to be in rough shape because I hear they don't ship well for whatever reason... It was at the lfs for a day before I picked it up all polyps extended took it home within hours all polyps were out. Hopefully that's a good sign usually my leathers take a few days to show polyps when I get them

The yellow will fade out if the coral is not given intense lighting, definitely acclimate it to your lighting, it should be moved up in the coming weeks if you want to keep or improve the bright yellow coloration. Fantastic Sacrophyton, but yeah in my experience it like more flow then one would imagine.

Never had any luck with them they just shrunk to nothing. Local fish store said they like cooler water???

I may play around with the position as far as height is concerned. It definitely seems to love the flow it's getting though. Didn't expect it to open so soon. I'm taking that as a good sign.

I do have a spot that my pagoda is currently in at the top of the tank that gets flow from the return, although I don't think it's as strong as the powerhead. You think maybe I should have the 2 switch places? I don't think pagodas like getting blasted though...

Btw I think I got a decent deal on this leather... This piece is 6" I paid $50

This coral is harvested from the South Pacific, Figi, Tonga...I do not believe that it prefers cooler temperatures than the average reef system. I will agree that as far as Toadstools go it is not as hardy. I always had to have them high in the tank with stronger flow to have them thrive.
Since this coral is already open that is a good sign.

Yea my lfs said these for whatever reason are a hit or miss coral. We were both impressed with the condition it came in so maybe this will be a survivor. Fingers crossed! I've wanted one for a while

Btw after a long day I finally just got home and it's swelled and perked up even more. Excuse the crappy iPhone pics my actinics are on

Yellow Leather from Fiji will always be my favorite, what I did not know is that this leather likes high flow and high light. My next one I will know better.

I've had it nearly 2 wks and it still looks very happy. I'd consider my lighting more moderate but it is getting pounded with flow and it seems to love it

I should have known, my toadstool leather does not extend any polyps when the flow is off, he is really happy when the flow is on high

My leather has been in the tank for 2 days and he is starting to show some polyp extension around the edges. I have it in a high flow area and it seems to like it.
