What water change/ carbon media change schedule is everyone using for their sponge tank?

So, I had this yellow thing I thought was a sponge. I started feeding the ZeoVit Sponge Power almost 2 weeks ago. I do 2 drops every couple days. Since then, this yellow sponge has started turning purple, and has what looks to be little purple leafs with white tips growing out of the bottom. I thought I had already uploaded the "after" pic before I left for work, but I didnt. So I'll upload it when I get home. Here is the "before" pic though. Any ideas?

It looks like the before pic didn't attach properly (and I don't know what it could be based on the description).

Generally speaking, though, with ID help like this you would want to start your own new thread (typically either in the "Hitchhiker & Critter ID" forum) rather than comment on a different one - that way you'll hopefully get more people looking at it to see if they can figure out what it is (since your post asking for help then isn't hidden away in a different thread).
