yellow tang issues

I love that puffer. Looks so much like mine. They are great! About the tang, could be what we call black ich, but honestly does not look bad. Make sure he gets lots of food especially nori and other veggies. he should be able to kick that himself with life getting less stressful.

Oh, I can see that beautiful tail now.

Alright I'll continue to feed the little guy loads and replenish the nori frequently. Can't wait for those fins to heal and he gets more filled out.
the puffy is so personable too always begging and nips at whatever is on the tong for the eel/lionfish

I've been away for a little while, so I feel a little awkward just jumping in here.

First of all, nice score on two beautiful fish!

Second, how big is your tank? Tangs are extremely territorial, so if the system isn't large enough, you could just be witnessing a break in the tension as opposed to a cease. Continue to keep an eye on them.

The advice about their diet is spot on. Keep doing what you're doing. I feed Hikari's brine and spirulina mix with good results if you're looking for more variety.

Last, I know you said there were damsels in the previous tank (I can't stand those little terrors), but I would bet money it's the puffer nipping the yellow's fins, not the former roommates....just a thought.

Its a 75g, and the aggression is pretty much kicked the bucket they eat nori next to eachother off the same clip, sleep together I guess it was just that first initial hour together my kole did not like him, and I know yellows arent supposed to go in this small of a tank but everything is going smooth and i'm definitely going to get him a bigger tank sooner or later, that is a given.

Glad the diet is on the right track, I feed mainly hikari pellets, and mysis with a healthy pinch of spirulina every so often, and of course replenish the nori when need be.
About the puffer I know where you're coming from I've seen puffers be super aggressive and little nippers but this fella is so nice and relaxed all he does it follow the yellow!
the yellows fins are for sure healing I can see a difference day by day.
Honestly I think the puffer is the most docile in my tank atm haha. Ill post a pic of the yellows fins tomorrow, to show some progress, he is definitely getting a belly on him now too.

I hope your initial observations are right. Keeping them all well fed is probably the best thing you can do to keep aggression minimized. Just be prepared to nab one of the three at any given moment.

The only thing holding me back from getting that exact puffer is the fin nipping (and the cleaner shrimp cocktails I currently have). It is a very controversial "reef safe with caution" fish, so I won't be the only one interested in seeing how well behaved it turns out to be.

What caught my eye was this is a very similar situation I was in about 10 years ago. I had a 72 gallon with a gorgeous sailfin (my very first tang!). I added a yellow about a year later and had a very similar experience. The sailfin was...less than pleased...very aggressive initially. Then they started to get along and I stopped pressing my face against the glass every minute until about a month later when I noticed the sailfin had some nips off his fins.

Long story less long....the yellow bullied him until both his top and bottom fins were literally completely gone. I tried and tried to catch either of them for months so I could save my poor sailfin, but I had too much rock and failed every time. The yellow eventually killed the sailfin.

I guess what I'm saying is, don't let your guard down. Tangs are thought to be beautiful, peaceful, stereotypical reef inhabitants. But the truth is...they're A holes...

Well this yellow tang is getting short straws every pull it looks like, all was well before this morning I wish i took a pic but couldn't get the time, now he has 2 clean slits in his tail and scratching on rocks constantly, first time I had a good look at the tank it was all he was doing for a good minute or 2... Should I try to get him out and treat, or maybe soak some pellets in meds for him in the dt? Don't want this guy to suffer like this especially in the long run put my tank in a bad place.

Edit: Forgot to mention im assuming the cuts in the tail are from the tangs fighting? If so I really cant see the aggression but its there never the less
And I just saw my kole tang itch... So what could I do here, I have a dwarf lion, eel, bluespotted puffer, kole, and yellow tang, with an urchin too..
