Well this thread seems to have run its course with no one able to provide a study or proof that a tang will suffer in a small tank. Interesting. At least that's the way I see it.

Bottom line, do we know that a fishis "happier" in a six foot tank that a two foot. Assuming they appear health in both.

I am going to invent a form fitting tank for fish. It will have 1/2 on an inch between the "tank" and the fishes skin all over.
There will be different styles for different fish shapes and they will come in a range of sizes to keep the fish comfortable as it grows. Rechargeable batteries will let you take your fish on the go for up to 8 hours.
Some models will have wheels because groupers just get to big to carry with a shoulder stap.

One tang in a 2 foot tank is happier than 2 tangs in a 4 foot tang. They are often territorial and having their own smaller space is far less stressful than being caged up with another. Yellow tangs are are built to navigate tight areas and rocks they are not open water fish. If your solo tang gets ich (a definite sign of stress) I would be absolutely astonished. If your big tank of tangs gets a massive ich outbreak well that happens almost always not surprising.

One of the points of the thread was if there were any studies. No one can point to one. You wrote that scientist don't have time for hobby stuff but if you look at the type of stuff grants are issued for you'd see that isn't true.

Personally I know many people who have/do keep a single yellow tang in a 55 and they show no signs of stress. They seem very happy and can live longer than expected. It is solely based off opinion and everybody has one. It’s not like we’re talking about a hippo tang in a 7minibowl.
