My biggest money waster isn't so much buying things I don't need, but rather things that either didn't work as advertised or most often - buying something for cheaper, but then I ended up upgrading shortly after, making the previous purchase worthless.

For example, when I did my QT on my current fish, I should have just bought the hannah tester from the start for copper. Instead, I bought a cheaper test, couldn't read it well. Bought a 2nd test, couldn't read it well either. Then I finally bought the Hannah.

What is something you've purchased for your reef that you didn't really need at all?

Yes. I got started in the hobby last March with an AIO nano, expanded to a 10 gallon, then to 55 gallon by June with some trial and error equipping it. So, though I’ve only been in the hobby for about 15 months, I already have extra tanks, lights, skimmers, heaters, filters and maintenance equipment enough to start other projects.

have some reef rally pro, cipro, reef flux, brightwell reef biofuel, and some BRS ROX carbon, that just collect dust on a shelf. at least i have them? i guess...

i do see myself starting to have a few reef moonshiner products on the shelf as well that i don't use anymore after my correction doses, but i knew that could happen when i started the program.

My stuff is more stuff I used, and then upgraded or got something different.

Mag drive pumps, I think I have 3 or 4 of the big ones, 2400gph maybe. It was basically a heater and pump in one.

AC powerheads, small utility pumps like maxi jets, couple of reactors I don't use. Nothing too crazy

Alk and calc dosing stuff, maybe not extra but around just in case. I have an extra coralife light from my 40b. Replaced it with the xr15 I won at a live sale. I now have some dark corners, but if I want more light demanding corals, I have the light for them; plus those corners sit empty anyways. That's about it for reef extras. Fw extras are hard scape, plants and more meds.

Maybe it's just me but I have "A BUNCH" of styrofoam coolers with associated boxes from all the frags I had shipped to me over the years. They've come in handy from time to time (selling and trading frags) but I have way too many extras.

Most of my used stuff is worth more than when I bought it brand new.

I voted other as my answer is both yes and no.

Equipment--I buy what I need or needed at the time. So if I upgrade, then I have leftovers. I also have a ton of old stuff, like powerheads that I think I can take apart and maybe get to work again. Prob. will just dump lol's. I have 1 new doser that I plan to hook up to the observation tank. Just haven't had a chance.

Additives--these I often buy to have on hand or were recommended so I have lots I don't use but if I need, I have.

So I'm pretty good about what I buy and why but do have some clearing out and organizing to do

What is something you've purchased for your reef that you didn't really need at all?
Nothing really. I just go to the reef store and if I see a coral or a fish I want, and if I can get it I will. If I need equipment or something before I can get it then I’ll just get the equipment or requtifrostuff first. And then I’ll get the fish or coral after.

I'm trying to go waterchangeless. So, I have an expensive $250 Bashea Pellet reactor to try to control nitrates. Once it's full and over 8 weeks I was promised that nitrates would stay stable with my 340 gallon display. I slowed my vodka doser down hoping to free that up for dosing magnesium and well.... As I slowed my vodka doser down my phosphates and nitrates skyrocketed. The reactor has done squat for 4 months in.

I was then told to add in nitrate consuming bacteria. So, I dosed Micro Bacter Clean to sead the reactor. . . . This. helped my phosphates, and some of my nitrates, they did start going down, but, after the base large dose of 300 ml. a few days later both started climbing back up.

So, I've since reactivated my vodka doser, have a pellet reactor that seems to be doing almost nothing, I also have a cannister filter filled with Matrix rock that was supposed to also reduce nitrates. (Which has done nothing for the last 6 months. )

So, I've got 4 nitrate export mechanisms and nitrates were still rising until I just increased my vodka dosing. So, I probably have a $150 cannister filter, $250 reactor that are absolutely doing nothing but passing salt water through them. . .

I thought I would need some Benepets coral food to keep Phosphates and Nitrates up once these things started working. Now the coral food sits on a shelf. . . Some of it might go into my frozen fish food.

I do my best to only have redundant hardware and backup units for lighting / pumps and dosers waiting in the wings. Anything else, I'll keep for awhile, but will eventually sell if it is just sitting around. This hobby is too expensive and consumes way too much space, to not manage all of the excess.
