what are your precautionary rituals when you first get a frag or a wild colony? so far, i haven't been taking any precautions but i'm seriously considering doing furan-2 dips on all new incomers. not too concerned with hitchhikers, but more with pox.

I dip just about every thing I get from the LFS. You just never know IMO. If its from a fellow reefer, I usually dont worry about it since all I buy are frags.

jody where do you get the 'tropic marine pro coral cure 3x strength' from? haven't seen those around any lfs. no luck on google.

just a FW dip here with all new additions. going to get some Furan 2 to have in the "medicine cabinet" but don't think I will do it with all incomers. Just my .02
Scott

got zoanthids?

what about furan-2 dips as precautionary measure? or should i only do so at the sign of pox? here's the piece i'm worried about. it's been ~ 2 days. only few polyp extensions, the others seem to be not opening or sorta melting. can't tell for sure yet.

also the tropic marin pro coral cure seems to be only for sps?

it works on all i mainly use for hitchiker removal but it works as a medicated dip as well but as far as pox goes best remedy ive found is put in higher flow.

For zoa's/palysI do a lugols and tankwater dip for about 20mins. I have a small 1 gallon bucket that I use and I add 20 drops of lugols. I also do a close inspection to make sure there are no pests on the frag. If I see any pests I run the frag under tapwater for a few seconds.

what are the diff. effects on zoas between furan2 and lugols?

i've searched for lugons in the past...@ cvs and whatnot. they just gave me a weird look. besides online, what other sources are there? also...what does iodine do to the zoa polyps?

I rarely dip any of my zoa's for a specific reason.....i 80% of the time only buy aquacultured (non-wild). maybe on an occassion i will but i have never had any problems with fungus, pox, nudis, or any asterna's in my systems. I'm not trying to promote this way of doing things its just it works for me.

But, when i do dip i use Lugols....:)

After purchasing several colonies that I thought at least had been in captivity for a while AND not dipping them because they came in very cold, I found myself with the troika - flatworms, zoo-eating nudis and even a few zoo spiders.
After a freshwater and fw exit dip and a "nuking" of the whole tank with freshwater I am now clean.
EVERYTHING gets dipped now in at least freshwater and iodine.
By the way mushrooms, xenia, and leathers do NOT like freshwater dips apparently.

All my new zoas get a 20min dip in 1-2cups RO water with 1 packet of Furan-2. Then they go into QT for 4-6 weeks. I do a total of 3 dips with Furan-2 on every single new zoas during the first week.

Then before they go into the display they get a 10min tip at 2X strength in TMPCC.

I dip all new frags and colonies in my tank as I go to set them in their fial resting place.

LOL! JK! I FW dip, but I need to get some lugols.
