Do YOU keep your tangs in the right tank sizes? As someone who is stuck with a 75g 4 foot, I will never be able to permanently keep any of the tangs other than the bristletooths. I am looking forward to getting a small tang and housing it for a year until it outgrows my 75.

Lets take a yellow tang. I think a big part of this 'debate' - is that someone with a 5 foot tank says a 4 foot tank is 'too small', a person with a 6 foot tank says a 5 foot tank is 'too small', a person with an 8 foot tank says a 6 foot tank is too small etc etc. The reason - yellow tangs 'get to be 10 inches in the wild'. While this can be true, they also live to be 40 years old in the wild and more. It is highly likely that this will not happen in an aquarium. Though there is an initial growth spurt when they are small - a fair bit of the growth occurs slowly over decades.

IMHO - if you look at data (and there are plenty of studies out there) - about 'fish range' in the wild very few of the fish we keep should be kept in any sized 'home tank'. So - it comes down to how the fish is 'acting'. I think you can keep a tang in a 4 foot tank UNTIL it appears stressed/neurotic/etc. Some never do.

I think I'm ok I do avoid the really large tangs (18" plus sizes) even with my tank. which is 10' x 5' x 3' 1100 gallons
I think you've got it covered lol

I'm over here debating if a 6' 180gal is too small for a sailfin tang

A friend of mine has had a sailfin tang in a reef tank - I believe for about 25 years. it is like a 'pet'. Not stressed. doing well. PS - was a 150 gallon cube

I think your ok 6' should be adequate for the Sailfin, I have a Sailfin and he is less active. The clown and Naso seam to be the most active.

I think the key word here is "recomended". Depends on who you get your recommendations from.
Just like general recommendations that everyone rolls with. For example, most of the minimum tank sizes on live aquaria and on this forum. Ex 180~ 6 foot tank minimum blue tang or something like that

Oh I haven't chosen yet between the 6' and 8'. I need to put a thread up where someone can tell me if I can fit an 8' down my basement stairs lol

It's worth noting that "recommended" sizes vary quite a bit internationally.
The recommended tank sizes for the larger tangs (in bold) from Danireef are 45G smaller on average.
Danireef is the most popular website in Italy about reefing, they collaborate quite a bit with reefs.com. Their article on the recommended tank sizes for tangs is also available in English, in case you're curious.

I think it's worth noting because it does seem often than there's no other point of view on the matter other than what is being recommended in the US.

Build a cardboard box that matches the size tank you want and that will tell you if it will fit. I would build the cardboard an inch or two larger just to be sure.

the reef2reef one is quite old or outdated

Recommendations based on what is often what I question. Had 26 tangs in a 660g. I moved many to my 135g which is a total of a Happy 18 tangs for many months now.
Its all about diet and maintaining a healthy environment and good water quality.

135g:

I have a lot of tangs in my tank included but not limited to yellow/scopas/sailfin/purple/gem/blue. My tank is around 70-75 gallons for display. They are getting along well. However, when you add new tangs on your current tank, they will fight to each other a while. I guess I'm lucky cuz they only fight few hours and then become nice to each other. I would not recommend you add multiple tangs in the same times. BTW, I just purchased a BLACK TANG!!!!!!! It is on the way to me!!!!!
