Youtube and fritz salt?

I have noticed that fritz rpm salt is all over youtube. I do not doubt that it is a decent product. However when almost everyone uses it on youtube it makes me think that they are either sponsored or are receiving the product for free. Lets face it the reefing community is not that large and youtube creators are basically the face of the hobby now. I have absolutely no problem with anyone having sponsorships and not saying 100% that this is happening but it feels weird to me. I personally use IO and wont switch. I am probably just overthinking the whole thing but just thought I would share.

I totally agree with you. I’ve used reg IO salt from day one in my tanks. I started saltwater in the spring of 1993 and I have looked at and thought about switching several times but never have. Heck Jason Fox only uses reg IO salt and look at his beautiful tanks and corals!
 
Many vendors pay or give free products to shills. I once got offered enough LED panels to cover all of my tanks if I would just post good things about the company and product - I declined, but they have other people on "staff" who shill for them.

I use IO too... after I wandered away a few times, I was always disappointed and made it back. I won't say "never" but IO would really have to change something or mess up for me to wander again.
 
Fritz seems to be at every reef show across America. Many of the YouTube guys/girls go to these shows. That's most likely the connection that leads to the sponsorship, or free salt, or whatever. Fritz probably feels like that's a great value for their marketing dollars and a lot of YouTube people seem more than willing to try out or use free gear. Maybe even why some continue to do it?

I personally don't care what they do, but enjoy occasionally watching some reefer channels while I do maintenance, testing, etc... I've never bought anything because of a suggestion through a YouTube video, but I have been in the hobby long before YouTube was so popular.
 
Completely agree that fritz has definitely done well with marketing there product. Kudos to them. Is there obligation for youtubers to be upfront about how they get the products that they use? Of course not....but it would be nice if they did. The dimb things i think about on my mail route...lol

My guess by looking at that persons post log is they are just a troll looking to add post numbers and stir the garbage. Just my take on what I saw tho.
 
I’ve passed through your area a few times both as a civilian and while in the Marines. There’s a awesome Korean restaurant just north of the base I always stop at. Had to look it up to remember the name. Seoul restaurant off off Dyers St
 
There is a lot of sponsor money and free equipment given to YT influencers. It’s pretty common. Most SW YTers are going broke trying to build content so I don’t mind it. There aren’t many independentally well off YTers like say Rico.

If you like them, click the affiliate links and buy stuff from them. It’s already bad enough that they spend thousands of dollars to consistently make content through builds to entertain etc. just take he reviews and recommendations with a grain of salt like you would with a commercial seller like BRS.

I tend to prefer ppl like Mr Saltwater Tank, Melev’s, and FishOfHex since they tend to stay pretty level and don’t go shill crazy.

lol.. I happen to be half korean and when I got stationed here that is the first place me and the wife ate at. We go there at least once a month

If they're getting them for free, even if not in exchange for a review, they're supposed to disclose that. The FTC is actually cracking down on social media influencers, but I would imagine that it's only looked at if the competition complains. Our hobby is probably small potatoes compared to things like video games.
 
People on this board are supposed to divulge their free gear in exchange for posts and reviews, but they don't. I would view cautiously.
 
I have paid for Fritz salt before and used it and I really liked it. I've used many different salt brands and find that they all can do the job but vary from tank to tank in what you're looking for from a salt as far as the trace elements are concerned.
 
Probably a generational thing for me as well. I don't watch YouTube videos or do the reefing social media groups.

I did check them out fairly recently, and was glad that I had enough experience to see through all of the misinformation and follower mentality. I prefer books, magazines, scientific papers and just the couple of better forums.

However, it was entertaining to follow the AI Prime Facebook group for a while. A better name for the group would be "Let's all completely change our lighting schedule every three days and wonder why we can't grow anything"...:rolleyes:
 
cost too. Looks like found a nice niche in price, more than "budget salt", cheaper than "high end" salt. this also makes for an easier upsale for lfs, to go from IO to Fritz or red sea. so yes very good marketing. it also doesnt hurt that almost every lfs ive been in, (something like 10 around south carolina) seems to carry it too.
pricing, affordabilty, and marketing, has always been one way to a winning combonation.

I find it hard to believe any stall in your tanks growth was due to using fritz. If anything, your tank may have been reacting to a change period which in and of itself can cause initial growing pains. Salt is salt, some is synthetic others and evaporated but it’s all the same thing. For what it’s worth I’ve used fritz for years, the company has been in the industry for decades and I’ve always had success with their products and no I was not paid or sponsored to provide this comment...
