Zoas success with kessil?

Ok thanks. I have a 50 breeder with 2 a160we on it and there is nothing but shrooms and I just increased the color and intensity from 35/30 color and intensity to 45/35 and it was too much and shrooms started closing up. Back down to 30/30 color and intensity. May go lower when I get home from work today.

I have my a360WE x2 on the following programme, 18" deep tank, 7 inches from tank cover

2pm 5% power, 0 colour
3pm 30% power 10 colour
4pm 65% power 25 colour
9pm 65% power 25 colour
10pm 30% power 10 colour

I still found 10 hours a day total lighting to be too much for them.

They are good lights, you don't really want any palys right under the middle of the unit IMO, Zoas seem ok there but palys fade quickly, more blue might alleviate this

I just order two of those lights! Do they grow SPS?

My brother has the a350,s on full blue and white on half and his sps grow like crazy.

This was just after he moved his stuff in to a bigger (4ft) tank but he's only ever had the kessils since he started and they were all 1" frags to begin with.

Here's some other photos I took with my phone. The ricordias are each about the 3-4 inches in diameter!!. Blastos started as 3 heads.

I think a lot of it is down to general husbandry though. He also has a marine biology degree which i guess is quite handy to have in this hobby.

Wow great looking tank!

It certainly is. Makes me well jealous as I started reed keeping before him.

I think it's mainly down to his system which is supplemented with NP bacto balance, I've been hearing Lots of great things about that stuff

Thanks for all the info on the kessils. I have noticed that palys will fade if kept close to the light output.

Yeah and it's really weird because they will still stretch a bit if the intensity isn't high enough.

This is why I'm going to try the acrylic light diffusers over the lenses. It's really quite harsh in the centre

What are they just plain acrylic/lexan enclosed in black plastic to block some of the intensity and increase spread diameter? I would just make my own at work.

I'm not sure mate.

I just googled LeD light diffusers and the stuff that caught my eye was called "opal acrylic light diffuser" it's used to make light boxes etc.

Those discs look pretty white to me. I thought you were looking at something closer to the kessil ap700 light diffusers. Will the leds still penetrate thru what you got?

Yeah they were restricting too much intensity.

I only saw the ap700 diffusers after I had purchased these.

I will maybe look at the ap700 ones instead now

My zoas look pretty good under my kessil a350. I have not kept zoas for too long but my orange bam bams have grown well recently.

ive used kessil for most of my hobbyist years...great shimmer and decent growth...but have recently upgraded to ecotech g4s......if u aren't doing sps..kessils are the best..cheap option

Why do you mention not doing sps with kessils?

My brothers acros are humoungous and he's growing them all under 3 x a350's In a 120 gal 2ft deep tank. He's using 2DKH per day per 100l tank volume, the growth and colour are spectacular and not just the sps.

I recently got a PAR meter and used it to compare my a360s with my Hydra 26. Kessil was set to 60% intensity, hydra was 35%cw, 120%RB, 110%b, 40UV, 70 Violet (maximum setting for intended colour hue)

2 inches under the unit,

Kessil - 550-600 PAR
Hydra 26 - 200-300 PAR

If you want an LED to replicate a Metal Halide fixture Kessil is the way to go without a doubt.

Radions are great lights also, but not the same as kessils and can't be compared IMO due to kessils single point and complete mixing of colours before they egress from the lenses .

Also no worry about burning your corals with UV under Kessils, the proprietary UV mix / ratio is always spot on.
