1” vs 1.25” return, HELP!

Sump bulkhead? Why do you want to attach the return to the sump itself? As far as how to connect to a bulkhead, use a barb fitting. It is really the only way I know of. I will say I have never used a single bulkhead fitting when connecting a return line. I have always just mounted the hard PVC to the stand using standoffs and it free floats over the back and into the tank. There are several benefits and only one downside. The down side is, you can see more of the return line when looking from above a rimless tank. However, when looking into the tank from the front, you see less of the the return than you do with drilling it through the back. Plus, when drilling through the back, you typically have it siphon down a lot further than we setup correctly over the back.

I have the Triton emerald sump and it has 2 hard plumbed drain lines into the sump filter sock area. A lot of sumps have hard plumbed bulkheads with unions nowadays.
 
The problem with 1 1/4 is it's the standard size for sink drains. Sure they make stuff for it but you'll always have problems getting things to fit. My advice is don't use it and go to 1 1/2.
 
1.5" lines for 1000 GPH is pretty excessive. But to answer the previous question, yes, I would just use silicone from the pump to the bulkhead.
 
Drill for larger and use a adapter/bushing if you cannot find the stuff. When you are ready just enjoy the larger bulkheads.
 
I would have them drill for dual 1 1/4" - you can always use bushings to get down to 1". Increasing the diameter of the return hose can make a sizable difference, depending on head pressure and the pump you use. 1 1/4" bulkheads, valve and unions are available on BRS. USPlastic does carry 1 1/4" ID silicone hose but it IS expensive.

Here is the info on your pump. .
Flow up to 2000 gph
Input Size - 1" Slip PVC If going external......if internal then it does not matter.
Output Size - 3/4" Slip PVC or 1 1/4" Slip to BSPP Union
The 1" drain bulk head will restrict flow to about 600 to 800 gph. A 1.5" will move about 900 to 1000 gph.
My Ipinion:
I would go with 1". 1.25 in slip-slip will not be easy to find.
 
I thought about this but Synergy said they don’t make adapters for 1.25 down to 1.




 
Does anyone know where to get bushings/adapters that will allow me to put a 1” bulkhead onto a hole that is drilled for a 1 1/4” bulkhead?
I do not think such a thing is avail. To make a seal you need a bulkhead or uniseal. You might be able to insert a uniseal into the hole then put a 1" pipe into that seal. You will need to check hole sizes.

You install 1-1/4" bulkhead and then install bushing or reducer coupling.

The article you quote is for an open channel drain line that does not create a full siphon. That is completely different than that used for a return line, or even a drain that is capable of a full siphon. For example, I have seen 1" drains that are capable of pumping well in excess of 1500 GPH. With a 10-12 foot drop, they can even approach 2000 GPH. That is just a gravity drain. A 1.5" line is capable of flowing well over 3000+ GPH. Dual 1.5" return lines are extreme overkill for a system of this size. Use 1" lines, and use 45s instead of 90s. Without breaking out the calculator, I would guess that the flow difference would be within the line of 10-15%, and 0% detriment to the health of the system. Not worth all the headache.

I’m trying to find an adapter that would allow you to use a 1” bulkhead in a hole that is drilled for a 1.25” bulkhead.

Synergy had a video showing a bushing that allows you to use a 1” bulkhead in a hole drilled for a 1.5” bulkhead. Why would I not be able to do this for a 1” in a hole drilled for a 1.25” bulkhead?

I’m just trying to plan ahead and lock in multiple options before spending $1500 bucks.

I may or may not be able to run 1.25” pipes for my returns. If I have it drilled for 1” bulkheads, then I’m limiting my options. If they drill for 1.25” bulkheads and I have these bushings that let me also use 1” bulkheads, then I’m not locked in to using only 1”.

That is a good looking sump! If he has one that goes from 1.5" to 1", I don't see a problem making one that goes from 1.25" to 1". I do know that the manufacturer most of us use to buy bulkheads from don't make a 1.25" bulkhead. That is probably why he does not offer them. I went and measured both the 1" and the 1.5" bulkheads. The 1.5" bulkhead needs a hole a tad bit bigger than 2.35" in diameter, and the 1" bulkheads flange is 2.7" diameter. So technically, the 1" will still secure in a hole for the 1.5" bulkhead. Those adapters just help to center the bulkhead for you. If you can find you a bulkhead fitting that is 1.25", and the flange on that bulkhead is more that 2.7", then anyone should be able to make you a bushing to center it. Do note that the bulkhead won't create a water tight seal with whatever you are putting the fitting through. But for this application (basically securing a pipe coming out of a sump), it doesn't need to. So the sump is not available with 1.5" return bulkheads?

It is available with a 1.5” bulkhead on the return but he can only fit 1.

Since I want 2 bulkheads, the 1.25” is the maximum he can do on the return for 2 bulkheads.

Do you think if I just have him drill it for 1.25” bulkheads that I can still secure a 1” bulkhead to it without a bushing?
 
I don't know what the dimensions of a 1.25" bulkhead are, but I imagine so. Figure out what the dimensions of the 1.25" bulkhead are, and what size hole he would be cutting. You can probably get away with just eyeballing when tightening it, since the thing doesn't really need to be water tight, just secure. If not I am sure he can make you the bushing. I can't say for sure though without knowing all the measurements.
