I was also debating trying Paul b’s method of just using mortar and pvc. Is this a practical method still or has live rock advanced enough that it has become pointless?

I did the same thing!!! the search option in the upper right was my best guide getting back into the hobby. even doing a google search on an issue it seemed to bring me here for my answer. so, i guess experienced advice is very valuable.I read everything I could on R2R for a good 6 months before I joined. I even read stuff from 2018 and earlier.... Why because I was researching and getting my answers on my own. It's only been since last year that I started really chatting and trying to help out with answers.
I had saltwater tanks back in the 80's, so I knew some, but so much has also changed
Nice. We’re those corals like artificial or are they calcium carbonate dead spsI started my 125 old school, but now I'm getting ready to re scape and add the UV and a skimmer. I want to add corals and graft them on to the coral skeletons I have.
But, back to the regularly scheduled program @NoahLikesFish
Real dead coral skeletons. I got them from a place in Florida. Richards seashells.Nice. We’re those corals like artificial or are they calcium carbonate dead sps
Oh nice! Could I collect coral skeletons when I go to Florida? I see them everywhere in shell stores and on the beach. I want to naturalize a NSA for my scale because it gives good benefits to everything in the tankReal dead coral skeletons. I got them from a place in Florida. Richards seashells.
Thanks for the suggestion. Only the white skeletons will have grafts on them. The blue and red pipe organ will stay natural dead skeletons. What you could do is try to make like a ‘tree of life’ which would be conducive to bottom dwellers and top dwellers because there would be downwards facing stsghorn coral to make roots then plateaus for coral and obstruction for bottom dwellers wand open room for mid dwellers and coral. Honestly I might try this for my tank
If they're in stores yes, on the beach I don't know. You'd have to check.Oh nice! Could I collect coral skeletons when I go to Florida? I see them everywhere in shell stores and on the beach. I want to naturalize a NSA for my scale because it gives good benefits to everything in the tank
I’d boil them and dip in h2o2 waterIf they're in stores yes, on the beach I don't know. You'd have to check.
I used some Blue Ridge skeletons in my first tank and made the mistake of putting them in there at the beginning. They got stained by algae during the Uglies stage so I took them out and bleached them back to their pretty blue color. Now they’re on my shelf next to one of my nanos. They looked so pretty in my tank though. I miss them in there! Thanks for the suggestion. Only the white skeletons will have grafts on them. @Ricksreeefs they’ll turn all sorts of pretty colors too... likely matching the zoas.I think you mentioned a few times that you're not planning to dip your corals unless they're really sensitive. Using this method, I will bet that you'll have a couple of FREE nudibranchs. No need to worry about feeding those guys.
Never boil rocks, don't think you should boil the skeletons either.I’d boil them and dip in h2o2 water
Oh ok thanks for the tipNever boil rocks, don't think you should boil the skeletons either.
Have this rock too in both my tanks and I love it! Sry for the crap filter idk I didn’t have one and I didn’t want to buy one so I was just looking around and out some lens for my lil bros camera lol the waters also cloudy bc I was changing stuff in the back chambersMy newest tank (2 months old) built with mostly CaribSea Life Rock and some actual live rock hidden and mixed in. IMO, this is my favorite way to go. I have started 5 tanks and the two I used CaribSea Life Rock for (with live sand) skipped the ugly phase. Could still happen with my big tank, but hasn’t yet.
