30 Gallon Cube Reidi Seahorse Build

This will be about the 4th time I have re-built my 30 cube in the past year, so lets hope this is the last time, and the final time I do this! I was going to go for all soft coral tank and when I walked into the LFS a few days ago and came across 4 reidi sea horses I knew that I didnt want a all soft coral dedicated system anymore. I knew I wanted those sea horses. So I came home, totaly re-did the cube tank, and this is what we have so far! Rock is cycled rock, and Im also adding pre cycles water, and half cycled sand to help stablize the tank for the purchasing of the two to four horses.

To get this thread on the road, heres a few picture, sorry for the low picture quality.

I will be lighting the tank with a 150w MH light, filtering with a HOB filter and I will not be using a skimmer, I plan on doing small waterchanges daily.

Coral list should include:

LPS corals- Only ones with small feeder tentecals, very small so the sea horses do not get near them and eaten. I plan on a few acans depending on response on here.

Polyps- Only collecatbles that I can get my hands on.

Mushrooms- Im hoping to find a colony of Wild Jaw Breakers, me and my friend have a good source as well as other nice mushrooms, most colonys, I hope to have the mushroom colonies covering the bottom of the tank or pretty close to it.

Gorgonias- Only the photosythetic ones, I want to get about 3 of them and have them sitting on the high points of the rocks (2 on the front rock, one on the taller rock in the back)

Aside from that, I dont plan on having much else, I dont think I will do any pipe fish at this point unless I find some really cool looking ones. My fish abilities sound like it will be limited, so I hope to try maybe a trio of Bangii Cardinals and maybe 1 fire fish. Not quite sure what will work and what will not.

Tank now has water in it, and its clearing up super fast, I hand mixed 30 gallons of water so it only is partly couldy, mixed one gallon at a time, haha! Pictures on the way!

Here is the tank shots with and without water, I didnt set my umbrellas up to take these pictures, so they arent going to be as good as the others. I also decided to not use pre cycled water, just start fresh.

Without water, all sand in, light on, etc. just need water.

I took a one gallon water jug and I mixed each gallon by hand by shaking the jug, after it was mixed, I poured it into the 5 gallon bucket to let it mix futher, I put in a maxi jet mod and let it mix for 15 min.

Adding water didnt take me to long, here it is slowly getting water added! Even though the plate is in there, it didnt stop the sand from getting moved around considerablty.

Water is all mixed in, and its starting to clear up alot, it wont look any better for a couple of days till the sand dust and salt settles. After that, Ill add a small goby of some sort to see how it all works out.

Slowly but surely its coming togethre, little by little it will work better. Im already picking out corals, unfortunatly, Im so limited I cant stand it, and Im already planning setting up something else, not sure yet, but I really want some anemones and clownfish again, so Im gonna have to set something else up.

And heres a terrible cell picture of one of the horses at the store. I forgot my camera at home, or I would have had better picture, sorry.

It's 18x18x18 cube. I picked it up from Aquarium Wholesale in Missouri, I got it for $90 bucks...

Tank water is fully clear, I am going to add a small fish sometime soonish, then the horses after, Im not woried to bad about a cycle, pre cycled rock is full of life, and used old filter pads to help the filters ge going, slowly going to add my stock. Pictures wil be up in this thread tomorrow, to busy to post currently.

Think the sea horses will be here tonight! And excuse the slimy looking stuff at the top, the sand I use has a powered on it, and I guess I didn't wash it good enough and it floated up to the top!

looking good. A++ as far as flow. you wont be needing both of those powerheads in there. the ponys dont really enjoy current jumping lil most fish do in our tanks. so i would just keep one for movement.

Nice build! I'm currently setting up a 30G Oceanic Cube for my pair of Reidi. How many are you planning on putting in there? Reidi can get fairly large and only one pair is recommended for a 30G.

Both power heads seem to be low enough at this point, they are actully enjoying the flow alot, they seem to be anyways! Lol, seahorsesource.com said reidis like a lil more flow, so I added the koriallia 1 to add a lil more! So far so good!

Sweet! I only plan on 3 at this point, I have 2 females, so I need a male, so I think I'll order in a male, and get it going! And I thout it was 1 pair per 15 gallons, lol, iirc, may be wrong though!

Those are awesome, congrats! I just double checked on seahorse source and they say 20 for a pair 30-40 for 2 pairs. I might have to get another. :wink:

Are you sure that is a female? The belly's on mine are much more pronounced. I think mine might just be too young to sex.

The guy at the LFS said it was a female, he said that they are all female, lol, I can send the picture off to someone and have them tell me I guess! lol

New picture from tonight:

Both horses are doing great, they have eaten around 20 pieces of shrimp between last night and now, so Im pretty hopeful that they will do well for me!

I have sexed both of them, and Im pretty sure that they are both female, they dont seem to have a pouch, but I could be wrong!
