About ready to ditch my tank

Since the end of January I have been battling dinos to no avail. They popped up immediately after a tank crash. I’ve tried raising nutrients, dosing peroxide, extended black outs and nothing seems to work. Finally thought I got rid of them and they returned a couple of days later.

Im in the process of building a stand for my existing tank but I think I’m going to put a Waterbox Peninsula 25 on it instead and start fresh. Never had issues with dinos until now and it seems to be a hopeless fight.

No, unfortunately I don’t have a microscope or access to one

I noticed though that they only grow on the rocks, nothing on the sand and very little, if any, on the glass

So would I just put a sample on a little slide and hold it under?

Yep, there’s tons of options for pocket scopes too that was just a quick option. Once you know what they are it’s a lot easier to deal with. A UV sterilizer can help if they go in the water column, dosing phyto can help too..most tanks have dinos in them it’s just finding something that can compete

UV sterilizer prob wouldn’t be an option on this tank but dosing phyto certainly would be. I think I’ll pick up that microscope and see what I find! Didn’t realize they’d be that cheap

Are you putting your filter socks in the clothes washer? I was trying to find out what was caused mine, twice. Went through my Calendar, both times were after I ran my filter socks through the clothes washer, with Clorox Bleach only. The only thing I can figure out, is possibly Fabric Softener Residue. BTW I highly recommend getting the CalenGoo App. Just set it up on a computer first, then put it on your phone. I’ve never lost a bit of informatio, on this app. Even after doing an accidently delete on one of the calendar.

Algae barn ocean magik, it’s used for Dino’s and recommended by algae barn. I would still hook up the UV tho , just get the green machine and plug into DT it works wonders. I had Dino’s like yours , feeding tank like crazy, no water changes, and UV seemed to work. I also added a refugium

Probly made them too clean, Dino’s love a clean surface not yet harvested with other bacteria and tend to take hold first

Switched from filter socks to floss a while ago. Way more practical in my small tank

Dr Tim’s Dino treatment program has great results, I think there is 3 steps. That, a UV sterilizer with 3x tank turnover per hour, and a bunch, I mean a BUNCH of copepods. I recommend the ECO pods from algae barn, and Oceanmagik for phyto to feed and help populate the tank with Dino eating pods

IMO your lights are either ON too long for extended periods and/or the PAR intensity is too much for the tank.

Dinos thrive on photosynthesis.... thus the longterm solution is to find a 5hr photo period that suits your needs and dial back the PAR

I started dosing phyto and it actually seems to be slowing the growth. They’re still there but it doesn’t seem like they’re spreading as easily

Yeah I’m done with blackouts. I haven’t been running my 2nd light for quite some time. May try cutting the lights back a few hours. I think I have. 10 hour photo period with peak intensity for 6 hours. May try moving to an 8 hour photoperiod

How is this a long term solution? The vast majority of successful tanks run 10+hr photoperiods and don't have dinos. If you decrease your PAR low enough that coral can still survive, you can bet the dinos will as well.

Instead of giving up and throwing everything including the kitchen sink at the problem, maybe have a read through the HUGE dino thread on how to eradicate them.
