Well rev you need to come up for a visit you would have a hay day in st Louis lol

Hi all! Seeing the $200 price point and using Google Cache, we figured out that the coral in question was one of our Rainbow Acans! Anyone that knows me knows that I'm leaving for my first year of college in Marine Bio in a few weeks, so believe me when I say I'm not out to make a killing on this piece! The frag was priced, or so I thought, in line with some of the other amazing sponsors here on R2R.

We're never out to start any controversy or take advantage of anyone, but now I'm curious to see the market value of this acan! I spent way too much personal money out of pocket for the colony of this acan a month or so ago, and I don't see why we all can't have some fun while figuring out a fair price. For that reason, the frag is no longer for sale; we're auctioning it off from $1 on our Facebook Page!

I'll echo the sentiment of some of the R2R community thus far: pay what you want! If you want to pay more than your neighbor, the frag is yours. To the OP; I have no problem with you using our photo; it's just a picture you had a question about! On the topic of the picture itself, it wasn't, nor are any of our photos, ever, edited at all. Just to point that out, here are two pictures: the original photo from our perfectly white balanced camera, and then one that I tweaked to give an idea of it would look like if someone else were to try to sell it for top dollar. ;)

Anyways, thanks for the interest, everyone! Even if it was because we were in the middle of an inquisition. :D

$200 for that
I paid only $50 for this at my LFS and they labeled it as a rainbow acan so they knew what it was

Funlad3-Thanks for posting an honest picture. Your price is your price and you deserve to get the maximum value the market will bear. I personally have no issue with vendors selling at higher price point, so long as the piece is accurately represented. It's up to the buyer to decide the value, no one forces us to buy. What I do take issue with is vendors over photoshopping their corals and deceiving the prospective customers, especially the ones who are unaware of the photoshop game. To me that is the equivalent of lying and stealing.

Please stop with the photoshop line. 9 out of 10 people dont even know what they are talking about when they spit that out.

Really 9 out of 10 lol if someone wants to say photoshop let them . Does it really hurt you no . Does it make people upset some . But let's be real there is a lot of it being done in this hobbie . But really 9 out of 10 people u really think that .

If what you said was true . You would be the only correct one when it comes to photoshop on this thread and other threads

well majority of people just spout it off and they think they know what they are talking about cause its the cool thing to say these days. So how is it any different then when everyone cried back int he day before LED and when people showed off coral under 20k MH bulbs. So now its just something else for people to cry about in the hobby trying to say they get ripped off cause they see a photo that is under more blue light and they run some crappy 10k color and makes colors look drab. I just used 9/10 because the term is just thrown around so much and wrong majority of the time. You just seem to wanna try and make it literal to sound witty.
I would bet if i posted my pic up there on a thread so many would come in crying photoshop and cry its fake. Well they would be wrong like usual. The photo was taken with my 7D and 135L lens and the only edit done was to adjust the WB. WB is pretty much something needed to be done on EVERY photo taken under LED because the way camera sensors reactor to them.

While I do not care for some of the absurd prices you guys sound like a bunch of whiners. No matter how many of these threads you start nothing is going to change. You are just wasting your time. The consumer keeps buying at ridiculous prices so who is really to blame. :squigglemouth: Taking the sellers picture & using it in a ******** thread is BS to ME.

I will pay more then most for a coral but not nearly as much as others. The ridiculous prices to me are for tiny sps frags of some wild piece that you have only seen two pictures of. I remember when acans first came into the hobby. Chlaces are the biggest rip off there is IMO & $400 plus for scoly is just silly. Will I end up buying one at that price maybe because I really want a jaw dropper & I can save up some cash.

I took a few years off from the hobby untill about 3 months ago. I was in for around 9 years before that. Really nice corals always cost a lot more then average crap. I would throw away what some of you guys keep. Not because I am cool or rich but because life is to short to look at ugly coral. LOL Just because you can get a rainbow acan locally for cheap does not mean everyone else can. I used to live in Atlanta & had several nice stores to choose from. Now I live in Mobile Al & there is not crap around here & what is here is overpriced. I have bought almost every coral I have online because I have to.

Here is a link to my old tank so you can see I have been around for a while & know what nice coral look like. I had only may 3 or 4 named sps in my display but many named Zoas & palys. My point is I want nice coral & most times you have to pay to get them.

As for the original seller please keep bring in great looking coral & if I think its worth what you asking I will buy it. If someone is charging $250 for an 1" sps frag I just laugh & then when it sells I laugh even more.

My old tank.

Or ****** because they paid 4x what others have for the same thing

I dont back vendors and I wont pay more then 60bucks for a coral. I think Vendors charge outrageous prices cause they put a cute name on a coral acting like they created it. but I think the photoshop thing is way out of control. I think the naming of corals to jack teh prices way out of control is ALOT worse then a little be of photo editing.

I think you agree with most of us here...but you seem to feel like you are alone in your feelings... So the only difference between you and us is that we talk about it? But then again, that is what you are doing too. I think we are more alike then you realize :)

Jonreefer so now your cooler/better because you did not have to pay to play or because you got a better deal on coral then me. LOL Arrogance goes both ways. Ryan got it right different strokes for different folks.

I back no vendor in particular. Heck I just got back in the hobby. Sometimes its like I never left, this thread could have just as easily been posted 9 years ago. I do think some of the photo shop images are ridiculous but thats nothing new just exaggerated with the use of LEDs.

I back vendors that bring in nice coral at what I consider a reasonable price. That is subjective & based on my Opinion only. I support those stores & ignore the rest. People have been naming corals for years & will continue to do so.

Hello Ben,

Thanks for responding as I know you definitely did not need to. I feel bad for, somewhat, calling you out but was just trying to feel the consensus of the forum to see if I was totally oblivious or not to the said item. As I said in my original post, sure - you can ask for whatever price and the consumer can purchase it for any price they feel like it is worth. No harm done either way.

I think your idea for an auction is a brilliant idea. Isn't it amazing what photoshop can do nowadays? Your second picture looks a lot better of course lol. Here is a little R2R tip. Next time use photoshop and give it a cute name, then ask for $200. Then it will sell :). A few others on here like Pete, Ryan, and myself can see what items are photoshopped and we do not fall for cute names, but I will applaud you for doing it since most people buy items off of false colorations and cute nicknames. I am definitely not being sarcastic. I have my business degree and I say go for it. Since photoshop is allowed, you might as well profit. Plus, I applaud you saying this on Facebook lol "the second is tweeked to bring it in line with some of our competitor's practices.".

I back this vendor due to their honesty!!!
