Adding a Freshwater Forum to R2R?

IMO, keep R2R as is & if somebody would like to build a site specifically for freshwater that would be great, as I like both. Separate, but equal

I like the idea because ....our same great members who know each other can carry on that relationship in the fresh section without having to meet new people or figuring out who knows what.

I don’t like it... personally no interest in fresh. I don’t want to sort thru freshwater posts. (And @NotASpammerDude nailed it) salt water ads are already so busy it triggers my seizures.

So, as normal for me to be non confrontational I give one vote yes, one vote no, one vote doesn’t matter to me either way, will still enjoy r2r

I wonder if there is a forum add-on that would allow an entire sub-forum to be ignored? That way you could choose to see the posts or not. I think some people surf the forum exclusively by "new posts" which includes everything.

You could have an option to not see the fresh or vice versa

I'm just a mod, but also a lonnng time member and I for one am sad to see this comment.
Does R2R really come across as a place that puts ad revenue ahead of it's members?

FWIW, I'm one of the instigators for this, mainly because I put my fw build thread in the current sw build thread forum, because I wanted to share with my reef friends. That's all. No ulterior motives.

I only joined here a year ago (seemed a lot shorter haha) but I do see things moving bit by bit towards revenue portion of things. I dont want to derail this thread or start an argument, so i will leave it at that.

As for instigators, it's fair that you posted your FW stuff. I just have a bigger issue with seeing people post everything in reef sub forum because it is most popular one, even when better sub forums exist and should be used. I guess people want instant replies these days, and cant wait for few hours to get some responses, so they go to where action is. But hey, these are all 1st world problems, so what am I complaining about haha

I vote "no" to adding a freshwater forum.

I don't have anything against freshwater tanks, but i like to quickly scan the day's posts to see if anything applies to my tank and current saltwater situation. I don't want to have to go through a bunch of freshwater posts or start reading a psy only to find out it pertains only to freshwater. Plus, the forums are already so large that the search function can be difficult af it is... now we would bbq getting a bunch of search results for freshwater topics that use similar words but have different results in freshwater vs saltwater tanks.

Let's not even get into all the freshwater suppliers and then their associated posts!!

So I was debating adding a comment, but since I voted "no", I guess I should. My reason is pretty simple.

I come to R2R to find info and chat with fellow reefers, period. If I wanted to do the same about fresh water tanks, i'd go to a forum that specialized in that. There's definitely something to be said about hobby or interest specific sites, you can get info about the specific thing you're looking for (there's a reason there's forums for say Camaros, and a different one for Corvettes, or Mustangs, or 'Cudas...you get the point.....they're all muscle cars, but they are specific to the make/model).

Also, without getting deep into it, I suspect that SEO and even regular google searches would have a high probability of getting "muddy" which might make finding specific info (on SW or FW topics) more difficult. Right now, it doesn't matter what the topic is (kind of), if you search for "return pump for aquarium" because you're looking for a return for your reef tank, and google shows you a link that goes to R2R, you're pretty darn sure that it's specifically about salt water tanks and mostly likely reef tanks.

BUT, if the powers that be wanted to create a completely separate site for freshwater, I'd support that, I'd probably even sign up since I've had several fresh water tanks in the past and might be able to help out someone.

Bottom line, I come here because it's a reef forum, if I wanted to find info on FW tanks (which are cool too), I'd go to a forum specifically tailored for them.

Again I think that if it were added there would definitely be a border. In settings you could have like “allow freshwater posts” and “allow saltwater posts” and you can turn one on or both.

I really like this idea and I'll take it a step further in an idea. This is akin to the 6th grade dances back in the 60's where the girl's were on one side of the gym and the boys were on the other, and the two never met. The difference here is salt versus fresh. Now here's my lamebrain idea....similar to the choice of changing the screen from light to dark on the menu bar above by clicking in the lightbulb. What if you could simply click a similar type symbol that would only show salt or only show freshwater posts. This way we would be able to keep you sixth graders separated and out of trouble! And, if you wanted, you could flip back and forth to see both sides. This way everybody is happy. Now being totally IT illiterate, I have no idea if this is possible....but it sounds good.

As the site is currently set up those interested in posting freshwater topics could do so in the lounge. I don’t see how making another sub forum to encompass all of freshwater would make much of a difference. Those interested in adding a freshwater section could push the point by posting in the lounge, and showing the doubters what little difference it would make.

Plantedtank.net Most of the time, aquarium advice sometimes they are friendly.
I use reptileforumsuk (rfuk) for anything reptiles and general fish.
We have a lot of pets (snakes lizards, fish, dogs, roaches we raise for the lizards lol)

Yeah this place is the bees knees for sure.
In order to make space for my first saltwater tank, and also the next one I was planning before I even got this one home, I had to tear down 3 tanks
No looking back now
No ragrats

I like the idea. I only hope that it doesn't become a little-used subforum, like some of the ones here.

Maintaining enough posters to keep a forum or subforum alive is always difficult.

So I’ve been thinking about this for a while:
Most people who have a reef tank (not all) have or at one point n their life have had a freshwater tank. I actually only have a freshwater tank now because my reef died over the summer. ANyways so I talked to @revhtree and he said maybe so i just wanted to see if anyone else would want this. R2r is a friendlier place than other forums so that’s why i though of this. Please vote below or above wherever it shows up.

I’m sure it’s already been said, but losing focus on the target subject will detract from the quality of an excellent resource for reefers. There’s a reason they say “jack of all trades, master of none.”
