Adding a Freshwater Forum to R2R?

Which FW planted forums do you use?

I'm on plantedtank.net and ukaps.org. I have my build thread running on both. lol

I’ve only ever had freshwater up to this point and never had a reason to use a forum. I like R2R as salt only. However, maybe a Sister forum, like a spinoff to a great sitcom.

No, I enjoy the seclusion. this is for reef stuff. I don’t want to have to scroll through the recent feed and fight to find reef related stuff.

I voted yes but I'm now leaning towards no.

Like many have said Reef tanks and fresh water tanks are two COMPLETELY different worlds.

What I would prefer more is Freshwater Forum run by the creators (Or trusted admins) of Reef2Reef as a sister website of sorts.

Freshwater tanks can be just as complex as Reef tanks and it wouldn't be fair to the reef keeping community to merge with the freshwater community.

It’s not like anyone would leave the site if there was a freshwater site.

I'm just a mod, but also a lonnng time member and I for one am sad to see this comment.
Does R2R really come across as a place that puts ad revenue ahead of it's members?

FWIW, I'm one of the instigators for this, mainly because I put my fw build thread in the current sw build thread forum, because I wanted to share with my reef friends. That's all. No ulterior motives.

NO it doesnt come across that way - but in reality - that is part of it - which is what I think the person was saying... Maybe im wrong - But - actually the person who requested the freshwater area - I think is also deluded - that this is 'somehow' more friendly than other sites..... that just means more heavily moderated..... (BTW - I'm fine with that) - but adding an entire section to a reefing site - for freshwater because this site is 'more friendly' - seems hmmmmmmmm. not correct

I agree with you. This site is easy to use. This site is not confusing. Adding another sub forum would not make it confusing. I think many people in the saltwater hobby look down on freshwater.

Why would you think that - most people who have saltwater tanks have or have had freshwater tanks. My freshwater tank is larger - and probably more valuable than my reef tank. I think people shoudl stop making assumptions. For ME - (ME) I never felt the need to go to a forum for my freshwater tank - and become a member - I have gone to look up various things. This is different - I dont see a lot of innovation/new products/etc in the freshwater arena - there certainly is in the marine area - I think thats at least one difference

I just don't see the point. Just create a who keeps fw thread in the lounge or something. You're going to have a hodge podge of fw stuff using up resources that could go toward sw. I come here because the sw subforum on another site is terrible with very little logical traffic.

It's nothing personal but if I want to talk fw then I go to a site specialized in that not a teenie tiny subforum tucked away in a corner.

I think it might be good when you click new thread have little freshwater question thing because there is a few FW questions that show up here it might be nice to have it labeled. But it should still be a mostly salt form don't change the name Reef2Reef or anything like that.

As a life long hobbyist the answer would be yes. As many AQUARIST love all types of the hobby. An people with the multi tank addiction have both fresh and salt. Both sides of the hobby can learn something from each other. It would allow people to learn from each other.

I really like this idea and I'll take it a step further in an idea. This is akin to the 6th grade dances back in the 60's where the girl's were on one side of the gym and the boys were on the other, and the two never met. The difference here is salt versus fresh. Now here's my lamebrain idea....similar to the choice of changing the screen from light to dark on the menu bar above by clicking in the lightbulb. What if you could simply click a similar type symbol that would only show salt or only show freshwater posts. This way we would be able to keep you sixth graders separated and out of trouble! And, if you wanted, you could flip back and forth to see both sides. This way everybody is happy. Now being totally IT illiterate, I have no idea if this is possible....but it sounds good.

I voted no, there are other forums specifically for that. Even though I have FW tanks and a pond at my home, I have different blogs/forums I follow for each. I believe if we allowed that we would lose sponsors that are specifically SW and the whole forum would get very confusing.

The most important factor here if we are going to include freshwater forums, the main page has to be organised that anything related to saltwater forums has to be kept separate from freshwater forums. This way reefers who prefer to carry on as normal can do so without any interference. In order for this to work any references sub categories should not in anyway get mixed up with the the reefing side. You could try a trial run, this way it gives time to see any bugs that might appear and how much interest that it generates. As for renaming! I would not change the name R2R, you could add to it like R2R & FWF (Fresh water Fish) this is just an idea and you could open it for a competition to see you could come out with a catchy name to win prizes!
By the way I opted for it would be cool! because I also have both

In all due respect I'm happy someone like @d2mini is enjoying planted and I've seen the thread on here...BUT here's the thing I myself (I'm sure im not alone) do not care one bit about planted tanks, guppies, bettas, discus , African cichlids or similar. I do enjoy puffers, peacock bass, wolfish, natives & big cichlids. I use places that cater to my specific interests in fw and were I can avoid the things i have 0 interest in. I come here to for my specific interests in the salt hobby and to avoid the other clutter of fw.

I'd love to participate but it seems like a bunch of things I have 0 interest in AND honestly trying to get away from by coming here is now going to be junking up my feed.

We already have certain aspects of salt we individually dont care about but it's part of the salt hobby so we can usually relate. At the very least you expect to have to dig through some aspects of salt on a reefing forum. We're already overlooking some of the newer threads related to salt just due to the normal traffic and now we're going to add to the problem by adding in an unrelated subforum?

I think a thread called "show me you're fw tank" or whatever would take care of everything in one neat little area and prevent a bunch of unrelated individual threads junking up the feed
