Algae issues? Why dont more people use algae scrubbers?

I ignored you the first time when you said something like that, but i must have hurt your feelings so I'll respond.
Am I supposed to care whether someone takes what I PERCEIVE as a success in MY OWN individual tank, and uses "my" advice, or not? Sure...I want all of us to have a successful tank, regardless of how its done, so i care in that regards. However, Do you want me to sleep if someone doesn't do it my way??
I thought this was a discussion board about the hobby. Please forgive me for participating and trying to answer your thread title question - "Algae issues? Why dont more people use algae scrubbers?".

The short answer is - 'because they don't work consistently, or have the same effects, across different tanks that use them'.

I don’t think I should be the only one called out for not adhering to the thread title. This became a discussion about how they work, why they work/don’t work etc. I have respectfully talked to those whose opinions I value and asked for their insight, and offered my own examples and experiences.

tell you all what. If you feel I have not added value to this thread or if I somehow have made it go off topic, I apologize and will remove myself from it going forward
I think you have added value. As others have as well.

There is much WISDOM here. Respect it.

I have 2 displays, mixed one is >years old and I have had issues with turf/GHA. The Acro is 7 months old. I’m putting a ATS on my Acro tank next week. I’m about to pull the trigger on my mixed tank as the Chaeto doesn’t last and isn’t doing the trick. BUT…. A few weeks ago GHA out competed the Chaeto in my Fuge, in a grand way. It grew through the Chaeto and over every rock in my Fuge. There is a 2 inch Matt at the top of my Fuge now of GHA. Not a lick in the tank (looking for wood to knock on). I’m going to let that Fuge just be. Now I’m not sure what to do, lol.

No. Don't leave. You are definitely adding value although I'll probably be called out for confirmation bias. I'm called out for not caring whether or not someone uses an algae scrubber or not.
Just too many opinionated and know-it-all people on here and if your opinion doesn't line up with theirs, well then your opinion is wrong.

there’s no stickies about them actually correcting anything
There are four stickies on the Nuisance Alage forum. None of them are specific to ANY algae solution, although Steven R's sticky breaks down the most popular solutions...and wuddyaknow:

ALGAE AGAINST ALGAE:
A refugium is a natural way of removing Phosphates and Nitrates from your system. If done correctly a refugium can eliminate a lot of algae problems..Simple to set up and maintain all you need is a 6,500k light source And some chaetomorpha on a reverse or 24hr light cycle. This Algae will out compete other algae for nutrients and will not leach nutrients back into the system and will not go sexual..

Yes..I realize he said "refugium" but "algae against algae". Same concept, no?

I think Shakespeare said it this way,

Participate all you want.

However, you are the one who had the problem with me saying "....I don't care"

That isn't controversial, but I never said anything bout this. However, you still haven't answered the questions that I asked in post 127.

I don't understand why you are taking this like a fight with me. You made a specific claim and I want to understand it.

I apologize if this seems like a fight; it's not how I view it. I'm just trying to help clarify to you how algae can preferentially grow in one part of the tank. Youre asking questions so I'm trying to answer them to the best of my abilities. See original discussion below

I don't see how algae in a different part of the system is competing at all with algae in the display.

The part I'm trying to get accross is the idea of comparative advantages.

I answered #127 with #132. It's about relative advantages because corals and algae have different intrinsic needs for nutrients as well as environmental factors that influence their uptake. In reference to the original discussion, it's lights that give the comparative advantage for fuge/ATS compared to the display tank.

I think your posts and experience have added a lot of value! Not to mention I've had a chance to snoop on your tank (beautiful setup!)

Great. I may be sloshing the vibes I am getting from the op onto you. If that is the case I apologize! I put him on ignore because he is damaging my calm.

This is not true. There are a ton of conditions (whether through lights or nutrients) where corals can grow well but algae cannot.
I am trying to figure out what those conditions are, and what lighting you are mentioning. I don't know of any photosynthetic coral that will grow in conditions in which problematic algae also won't grow, so I was looking for clarification on that specific point.

I get the idea of comparative advantages, and it is a good discussion, but not a practical one IMO. Any enviornment that you grow photosynthetic coral in will also grow algae. I get the idea, but it doesn't actually pan out that way in practice because algae is much better at life then coral and can grow with less light and less nutrients that the corals we are keeping need.
I have yet to see someone deal with algae only by using an ATS, but every time that seems to get chased down there are other algae mitigating factors at play in the system.

There are a lot of ideas that seem to make sense in this hobby, but with further practical experience don't pan out.

Please, if you REALLY must, by all means..put me on your ignore lost.
Because if anything that I have said to you or on this thread has done anything to "damage [your] calm", I certainly would not want to see how you deal with things in real life.
I guess you don't like that my opinion isn't the same as yours

Gotta love how simple threads like this get loads of replies, thousands of views, and tons of overall interaction. Yet, build threads don’t see more than 7-8 people ever comment and the OP talks to themselves most of the time.

But hey I get it! Lots argue about algae!!!! Great use of time and knowledge.

I really don't see what I said that ticked someone off. Because I said "I don't care" about something?
Or is it that I said some people are too opinionated or know-it-alls?
As far as I can tell, those are my only comments that may have been offensive to some of you, and I apologize

I wouldn’t apologize to anyone.

Tone is impossible to convey in text 99% of the time so we all put the tone in our head when reading and many times that tone is wrong or not what the poster intended.

You are 100% correct. I certainly did not intend to offend anyone, other than when I feel I am being attacked, and especially when I feel like I am being attacked for something that wasn't meant to offend anyone in the first place.
I USUALLY try my best to use my words very carefully because I know how posts can be misinterpreted. I guess I wasn't as careful as I thought I was.

No one attacked you. No one is offended. People pushed on some ideas you presented, which you are taking as attacks.
Then you said you don't really care, and that people that disagree with you are opinionated know it alls, which isn't nice. And your last response to me was certainly not nice - you clearly don't know anything about me to be judging me about what damages my calm.

I apologize for asking questions of you - I did not realize that this was a thread where you wanted to be agreed with, and you didn't want any disagreement or discussion that disagreed with the ideas you are presenting. This is not a dig, if I had know that at the outset, I would not have responded.

I can't recall if I have posted in this thread yet so the amount of wisdom contained in this thread maybe low? I do know that discussions on line can easily create misunderstandings among folks who mean well, or our joking around, or just trying to present an idea and the word choice and grammer lead to confusion.

Thankfully, I have never had problems with people understanding my meaning because I am so smart, clear, and precise with my word choice brilliancy that my friendly tone, wise perception, and the huge amount of fecal material spilling out of my Depends Brand adult diapers allows folks to have pity upon me and not get upset when I make a discussion point that doesn't seem to fit, or is perhaps offensive, or is just plane wrong.

I have noticed an uptick in "difficult" postings and disputes in a lot of different threads recently. I am not participating in Secret Santa because I am cheap and can't appreciate the fat dude in a red suit like I did when I was younger. Merry Christmas is a lot easier to say and I have found it has a clearer meaning for everyone weather they believe or not.

Peace on earth good will toward Reefer's.

Let's not let the stress of year end celebrations, traveling, and the Holidays creep into our forum engagements. Otherwise another thread will be slammed before I get a chance to put a stupid comment on line. I hate when that happens. And Now, a random GIF

I'll start by saying that I always try my best to stick to the facts of the discussion and not to make any comments or opinions on people in the discussions. I also live by the mottos of never back people into corners and always give them a path out. Impartiality is the way to go!

Now, back to the science:

PathsSimpleWrongComplexRight.jpg

As the comic suggests, life is often more complicated than we give it credit, and simple solutions of the sort “set your [insert fav param here] to X ppm and all will be solved!” are rarely correct. So if you're looking for specific parameters that will cure your tank of algae, you won't find them here. Tank to tank, there are a lot of variables at play and things are very dynamic. But this is the basis of my point!

Saying something is/isn't practical is subjective; if someone uses it, it can be practical to them, and vice versa if they don't. It's not the main point of my discussion, but I also hope to convince you that thinking of things as dynamic processes with relative advantages is an intuitive framework for looking at how your tank operates and can lead to real actionable decisions.

First off, your initial question was why algae is able to grow in one place but not another. The answer is in relative advantages. Ever notice how certain algae/corals grow better in certain parts of your tank? It's because of the relative advantages of that spot. Maybe more lighting, maybe better flow, maybe nutrients/particulares seem to fall on that spot. Now if one spot has an advantage, things can grow faster there than at other spots and suck up all the nutrients available. I want to posit that our fish tanks are not so big that resources are infinite. We do in fact see measurable nutrients rise and fall (there is NOT an infinite pool of resources to replace any nutrient that gets taken in) so these fluctuations will have an impact on everything else in the tank depending on them. So, favoring a patch of algae in one place will have an effect on the growth of algae elsewhere in the tank. Also, as others have mentioned, nutrients are not just N and P but other micro/macro nutrients that we aren't even aware of, so it's nice that we can just make algae compete with itself! Notice, however, that I am not saying what the magnitude of this effect will be, as there are a lot of other factors at play that change with one's reefing practices. I'll leave sizing of refugiums/ATS (or even desire to use one at all) to people's experience, but not considering the comparative advantages of lights was a glaring omission in logic for a number of comments that I am trying to help out with.

As for my issue with the statement that any condition that grows corals can grow algae: I don't like this statement because it's an absolute statement, which is almost always wrong (notice what I did there? Lol). A single counter example negates the statement, trivial ones being non photosynthetic corals living in total darkness or extreme deep water corals that can grow at depths that algae cannot. But as the initial comic I posted suggests, things rarely have simple answers and of course the details of what we're talking about matter.

Among the spread of corals and algae, each has its own ecological niche, accompanied by unique nutrient requirements and acquisition. The benefit of thinking of things as dynamic processes with comparative advantages is that we can seek out what those conditions are for our tanks / husbandry practices. I can quote simple things like bluer lights or low iron but there is no general rule for every tank because we all have different goals. Maybe someone likes nems and the blue light is too detrimental to them. Maybe we like macro algaes in the tank so we regularly dose iron for them, or maybe we employ other algae removal techniques and up nutrients to bring out colors of corals. But the unifying framework here is that the creatures in these systems have varying nutrient requirements and using comparative advantages gives us knowledge to favor the things we like and disadvantage the things we don't. So, we can tilt the scales to favor our corals and disfavor algae (if that is our goal).

With that said, I'll try following my second motto at the top, I appreciate your experience and am always interested in hearing other people's strategies for reefing!

Help me out...I just went over the 10 pages of this thread. No where did I ever allude to me not liking if someone simply disagreed with me. Disagree with me all you want!!! but don't disagree simply for the sake of disagreeing.

I think you directly asked me one question, about using other methods for 3 Yeats before I tried the scrubber, and I answered you, respectfully.
Your other questions, other people answered so I didn't necessarily feel the need to chime in...
But I may have missed something

You are right. "Attack" is the wrong word. But you really had an issue with me saying that I don't care about something.
I tried to relay what I THINK is my success in using an algae scrubber. If people dont believe it, or think that it might not necessarily be the algea scrubber, so be it...what am i supposed to say?
It's not a question of wanting to be agreed with. I'm married...I'm used to it. Lol
I don't care if people disagree with me and I certainly don't think that they are opinionated or know-it-alls JUST because they disagree with me. What I don't appreciate are the ones who THINK they know best and that other people's ideas are bunk, ESPECIALLY when they haven't even tried it. Like I said in another post, it's one thing if people try it and do not like it and it's another thing when people disregard it without trying it.

I get offended by nearly nothing. I will still anybody on this thread get the right consumers when your display starts grow algae even with an ATS refuge.
