Algae issues? Why dont more people use algae scrubbers?

I wholesale disagree with this. With the Vibrant deal, ICP testing thread, current False Claim products thread, etc. the number one ask in the aftermath is why people did not push back on both manufacturers and also the hobbyists who misunderstood, shilled or otherwise were supporting things for the wrong reasons. We had pages of academia and one-off experiences with all of these that just don't work out in most tanks. Why is this pushback bad in some cases and only good after the fact? If somebody can understand the real reasons why ATS do what they do and make a good decision, then there was a very good purpose.

The continuation with people who just don't want to get it might be starting to lose purpose, but the stuff about the ATS has not, IMO.

I didn't say "why are more people not smart enough to use an alage scrubber?"

It was simply an innocent question as to why algae scrubbers weren't that popular, and I asked after using mine for some time and at least convincing myself that it was the algae scrubber that worked on my algae.

Nothing more. Yet, someone took that as poking the bear.

Have you run an algae scrubber?
It was simply an innocent question as to why algae scrubbers weren't that popular
I ran variations for 2 years. Not sleeping a lot I spent lots of time googling scrubbers at night, that was an eye opener. I decided that the running costs were too high (10 or 11 years ago), allelopathic compounds possibly released in a recirculating tank was too much of a gamble, maintenance was too high. Anyone who thinks growing a postage stamp full of algae could control algae in a display tank are either a) wrong, or b) has one of the most allelopathic compound producing algae’s known to man. Pretty sure “b)” isn’t good. That said, folks who wanna grow algae, go for it.

Yes, I have in a wholesale facility. As stated before ATS definitely works.
that being said I personally prefer running a fuge. Be well and happy reefing.

Got any data you wish to share? My scrubber reduced N in my display from 60ish to 3 ( at its lowest), and P from >1ppm to around 0.15ppm as far as I remember. Being a wholesale facility were there lots of hidden waterchanges?
 
I ran an algae scrubber on my 400 & I was happy with its performance. I was not happy with the maintenance, specifically it was mounted on top of my sump under the tank and it was a pain in the rear to disassemble, clean, and reassemble under the tank. If I ever move to a place where I have my dream tank (10 ft peninsula with fish room adjacent) I may reconsider an algae scrubber. Current tank has a refugium under tank in stand with Pom Pom macro happily tumbling along. The bit of hair algae growing in there is being taken care of by a clean up crew. Much easier to maintain than that algae scrubber was.
 
The scrubber was on one of the coral flats which was initially established to grow out corals. Eventually we couldn't keep up with the demand so starting actively selling from that system. There became no need for the ATS because livestock was coming in and going out continually. We had a bank of twelve 180s . One was a dedicated fuge which was a constant source of revenue. Yes, the power of the dollar created my favoring the fuge. Personally, I dont even have a tank. Joined the forum to learn what has changed and get differing opinions. Be well and happy reefing.
 
I'll start by saying that I always try my best to stick to the facts of the discussion and not to make any comments or opinions on people in the discussions. I also live by the mottos of never back people into corners and always give them a path out. Impartiality is the way to go!

As the comic suggests, life is often more complicated than we give it credit, and simple solutions of the sort “set your [insert fav param here] to X ppm and all will be solved!” are rarely correct. So if you're looking for specific parameters that will cure your tank of algae, you won't find them here. Tank to tank, there are a lot of variables at play and things are very dynamic. But this is the basis of my point/
And the basis of my points in this thred regarding the topic - all you need to do to get rid of algae problems is add an ATS. This is what the current thread is about. That seems like a simple but wrong answer given the number of tanks we see that run ATS and still have algae problems.
Saying something is/isn't practical is subjective; if someone uses it, it can be practical to them, and vice versa if they don't. It's not the main point of my discussion, but I also hope to convince you that thinking of things as dynamic processes with relative advantages is an intuitive framework for looking at how your tank operates and can lead to real actionable decisions.

Check out the skeptical reefkeeping series because I agree with all that you have to say about science. I aslo think that mind stories live in the theoretical, and we convince ourselves that actions have efficacy when they don't, or we don't know they really do, because they make sense in our minds. However, efficacy in practice is another matter, and the list of ideas that make some sense theoretically but don't pan out practically in this hobby is long - ginger curing ich, the ecoaqualizer did what it was claimed to do, your fish get diseases from frozen food, etc. So, at some point, we need to leave the theoritical and look at the actual. This was the basis of my questions to you.
First off, your initial question was why algae is able to grow in one place but not another. The answer is in relative advantages. Ever notice how certain algae/corals grow better in certain parts of your tank? It's because of the relative advantages of that spot. Maybe more lighting, maybe better flow, maybe nutrients/particulares seem to fall on that spot. Now if one spot has an advantage, things can grow faster there than at other spots and suck up all the nutrients available.
Or herbivores are keeping it in check better in some areas than others, which we can expect given not all herbivores can get to every spot. Also, if you let the algae in a tank grow without a check, it can grow in just about every spot in that tank, we see examples of this daily.
I want to posit that our fish tanks are not so big that resources are infinite. We do in fact see measurable nutrients rise and fall (there is NOT an infinite pool of resources to replace any nutrient that gets taken in) so these fluctuations will have an impact on everything else in the tank depending on them. So, favoring a patch of algae in one place will have an effect on the growth of algae elsewhere in the tank.
Yes that is all theoretical (except that nutrients fluctuate (they do in the wild as well), and what I think we need to get away from to determine if a particular methodology generates the results it claims to produce. In practice, I am not aware on someone running a tank with no herbivores beating an algae issue by growing algae in anothe part of the system. In practice, in the majority of our tanks, the amout of any nutrient that algae needs to live is much less than the amout our corals need to live.
Also, as others have mentioned, nutrients are not just N and P but other micro/macro nutrients that we aren't even aware of, so it's nice that we can just make algae compete with itself! Notice, however, that I am not saying what the magnitude of this effect will be, as there are a lot of other factors at play that change with one's reefing practices. I'll leave sizing of refugiums/ATS (or even desire to use one at all) to people's experience, but not considering the comparative advantages of lights was a glaring omission in logic for a number of comments that I am trying to help out with.
And practically, we see a million examples of tanks with ATS having algae all over the place in the system, which makes me squint a lot at the idea that making algae compete with itself in our systems makes practical sense.
As for my issue with the statement that any condition that grows corals can grow algae: I don't like this statement because it's an absolute statement, which is almost always wrong (notice what I did there? Lol). A single counter example negates the statement, trivial ones being non photosynthetic corals living in total darkness or extreme deep water corals that can grow at depths that algae cannot. But as the initial comic I posted suggests, things rarely have simple answers and of course the details of what we're talking about matter.
However, we know the universe of discourse and we know we are not talking about extreme examples of animals that require no light. We are talking about reef tanks in general, and the majority of them have corals that require light. My statement that anywhere corals can grow algae can grow is in that universe of dicourse.
Among the spread of corals and algae, each has its own ecological niche, accompanied by unique nutrient requirements and acquisition. The benefit of thinking of things as dynamic processes with comparative advantages is that we can seek out what those conditions are for our tanks / husbandry practices. I can quote simple things like bluer lights or low iron but there is no general rule for every tank because we all have different goals. Maybe someone likes nems and the blue light is too detrimental to them. Maybe we like macro algaes in the tank so we regularly dose iron for them, or maybe we employ other algae removal techniques and up nutrients to bring out colors of corals. But the unifying framework here is that the creatures in these systems have varying nutrient requirements and using comparative advantages gives us knowledge to favor the things we like and disadvantage the things we don't. So, we can tilt the scales to favor our corals and disfavor algae (if that is our goal).

I ran a low light scrubber that grew algae fine, in the presence of a high light scrubber (which also grew algae fine) in the presence of a display that had no visible algae, but tangs and old rock and a few snails.
 
I run my display, as do many coral vendors, in blue only lights most of the time. I find corals do very well with just blues

My scrubber runs with only red leds. Which are known to enhance algae growth

So what’s to say that I can’t encourage algae to grow in a box with red leds in my sump more easily than in a display with blue leds ?

Tanks that have algae issues and are using scrubbers - maybe the scrubber is improperly sized? Maybe they need two. Maybe something is not ideal when it comes to the intensity or duration of the leds, or the speed of the water flow. Maybe it’s not using an ideal screen material. Maybe it somehow has an incorrect form of algae that has taken over. Maube they have another issue at hand besides phosphates causing the algae growth. Maybe the rocks are phosphate bound (they can absorb phosphates for up to a year, and it can take months to leach them all out)

For me after installing the scrubber my algae went through a phase where it got worse before it got better. It was a phase and it passed and didn’t return. I have never had herbivore fish to eat it

Don’t get me wrong I don’t think scrubbers are the golden key for everyone’s situation. But for me I have had great success with it and there is nothing else that I can attribute more for my tanks success

I have also documented my success in this thread with pictures of my tanks algae outbreak and pictures of it after fixing my scrubber. I did not add snails or cuc, I didn’t do water changes, I have no herbivore fish, I used no gfo or treatments, I simply replaced a broken air pump, and waited patiently

I don’t claim it will fix everyone’s problems. But for me I know for a fact my scrubber breaking (without my knowledge) was the catalyst that allowed the display algae to grow, and repairing the scrubber was the sole action taken that caused the problem to reverse and resolve itself
 
I now feed more than ever and have increased feedings and have had no impact on my numbers and no growth of algae in my display

7x a week I feed PE mysis flake food to my fish

5x week I take a cup of tank water and add in
- 2-3 squirts of brightwell coralamino acids (rec dosage is 1 squirt per 25g)
- 3 scoops brightwell reef blizzard s (rec dosage 1 scoop per 25g
- 2-3 scoops benereef
- 2-3 scoops goniopower
- few pinches of flake food crushed up

I use a turkey baster and target feed my torches, hammers, goni, scoly, Cynarina, Duncan, favia etc and the leftover mixture I dump in front of a power head

I have no skimmer, I don’t do water changes, and my digital test equipment consistently reads .02-.05 phosphates and 0-5 nitrates, typically 2 nitrates

I am no expert on phosphate impact from food but I am using max dosage of multiple foods, combining them, and dumping in my tank almost daily and the only place growing algae is my scrubber.

I take that back. I do have some bubble algae and the scrubber seems to have no impact on this. I need to occasionally manually remove. I also get film algae on the glass and need to clean the glass every 2-3 days

I gave my high level here in some previous post and said click on "My Tank Thread" link for more documentation on progress I've recently been having and what all I do to my maintenance.

But here's where it starts in that that thread with looking at getting the WSR on eBay to go along with my Turbo's Aquatics ATS I've had for years.

Here's my most recent test numbers, how much I feed, how I export and other mundane stuff

But I've documented this tank from transfer to transfer since I started in 2009 here on RC

The one thing I've always had in my tank is that RUGF. When I went to a 180 and a sump I designed my sump entirely around the RUGF and the ATS

I mean, as you can see, I've got nothing to hide and have documented my entire journey in this hobby.

Starting with that RUGF in the 55g I posted earlier I was growing calurpa in a HOB refugium using Actinic/blue lighting used as a moonlight to my main display.

Yes and I have been using it for 8 years successfully on multiple tanks

It doesn’t use a submerged screen. It uses air bubbles that get pumped up through a bundle of strings and the inside walls of the enclosure are a rocky sharp material he calls “green grabber”. The algae does attach to the strings and walls quite well

The air bubbles provide oxygen and water circulation. There is no water pump in this design / style

Is it the accumulation of the other methods that I tried, up to and including the ATS? I don't know...and YOU don't know either!! I said I do not have algae in my DT. I said I only have algae in the ATS. Some others have chimed in with similar experience, and somehow, that's impossible because if algae can grow in one part of the system, it JUST HAS to grow in every part of the system
