Am I crazy to consider switching to kalk??

So as the title says, I was thinking about this at work this evening. I have a Geo's Reef kalk reactor just sitting around so I would utilize that of course. But am I crazy to consider leaving 2 part? It obviously works but it seems that I am mixing more and more 2 part. I was up to 275ml of alk and 264ml of cal per day in my 185 gallon total volume system. Spending money on this hobby isnt really an issue but if I can save a few bucks here and there I am all for it. Would switching to kalk help in that dept?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

With 2 part u can control exactly how much you are adding per day.
Whereas with kalk linked to ur ATO ur evaporation controls how much you add. You can of course hook your kalk to a dosing pump and have a constant dosed amount yet you are still limited by effect on PH. Your best bet might be a combination of kalk (up to how much your tank can take without boosting PH) and complementing with 2 part

I would switch to kalk and use your 2 part as a supplement to pick up where fully saturated kalk stops. Obviously a calcium reactor with a dual stage regulator and masterflex pump are the best option, but if you don't have $1000-1500 laying around, then your proposed plan seems like a fine idea...mostly because I'm in the exact same boat. Mowing through two part like there's no tomorrow and have a kalk reactor hanging out in the garage not in use. I'm not QUITE using enough 2 part that my 0.8-1 gallon per day of topoff of fully saturated kalk would equal out so I haven't switched over yet but I will soon

can you explain why you think Kalk is taking a step back?

What makes the calcium reactor better? Or is that just your opinion?
How does calcium reactor help maintain PH, ALk, and Calcium?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I might just use the reactor and supplement with 2 part, seems like it would be the best route for me to go since I dont feel like spending a good bit of coin on a calcium reactor.

I am also curious as to why singlefin thinks that kalk is "taking a step back" is it because its not the latest and greatest? Just curious as to your thoughts.
 
The comment that kalk is taking a step back is accurate...but in a specific context. Kalkwasser reactors generally function off of evaporation only, so in that instance, there is a finite amount of ca and alk you can supplement through using one.

2 part dosing has the potential to carry a MUCH heavier load used alone vs Kalkwasser used alone. Kalkwasser can only dissolve so much in water before it saturates. 2 part additives are MUCH more concentrated and you can add a tremendous amount more supplementation before actually running into rising water levels.

So in that context he/she is accurate in that Kalkwasser is taking a step back. Because it cannot carry as heavy of a load on its own.

A calcium reactor is the best option for two reasons. One, it can handle an even heavier load of supplementation than both 2 part and Kalkwasser can, and without the detriment of changing your water level, or having a dependence on evaporation, since they run a closed loop circulation rather than adding fluid to the tank.

Second, calcium reactors function by dissolving actual coral skeleton and aragonite, so they also add perfect balanced amounts of ca, alk, and trace elements in the actual proportions used for skeletonogenesis. It will not cause salinity fluctuations, require frequent mixing and refilling of containers, ect. Just set it. Test alk weekly and adjust the reactor ph and effluent to keep up with demand. In those ways a calcium reactor is superior. Yes it's more expensive, and you have to check on the lines and pumps just as regularly as you would anything else, but they just are cheaper in the long run and can handle the heaviest load of all available options.

Completely agree, it may be a little expensive up front, and tedious; but in the long run it will save you a lot of headache and time.
 
Great, now you guys have me really debating on getting a cal reactor. My next thread will be "how to convince the wife to let me spend more money" lol

Wow. Thanks. Sorry. Been working all day. Thanks Bpb. Couldn't have explained it better myself. Sounds like you have a huge consumption. Kalk relies on evaporation so it isn't as precise. It definitely works for some. The reason I said it's taking a step back is I see it as a progression. Small amount of SPS, kalk works. As you get more, switch to 2-part. When you get tired of mixing gallons of CA and Alk monthly you move up to a reactor. That has been my experience. It does cost a little more to setup but way easier in the long run. If we make this hobby easier we will stick with it longer.
 
Also with a reactor once it's set you can test a lot less. After a while, testing all the time gets tedious. Especially when you have a huge "honey do" list and little ones running you ragged. [emoji4]
 
Thanks for clarifying @Singlefin it does make sense to have a cal reactor with a sps dominant tank I believe. Which is why I am now considering one.

I personally think you're crazy...whether you switch to kalk or not is irrelevant to that question... :p:eek::rolleyes:o_O
 
I would think either way you will want to run kalk. It's a fantastic way to keep your pH up while adding calcium and alk. I use 2-part but I also use kalk. I do not use it with my ATO, I don't like how inconsistent that can be - my tank might evaporate 1g in summer and 2-3g in winter. I know it always evaporates more than 1 gallon though, and I have a BRS pump that doses every hour so the total is 1g/day. I then use 2 part for the difference. With a calcium reactor pH can be even lower, so I would use kalk with a reactor too.
 
Kalkwasser and 2 part are a winning combination for the aforementioned reasons. I prefer to use a static storage tank over a Nilsen Reactor to avoid any solids making it into the tank. The solution keeps fairly well saturated for weeks if left covered and undisturbed.

Kalkwasser is magical.

I agree. Limewater (kalkwasser) may not be enough by itself (you need to evaporate at least about 2% daily to match your present additions), but the OP can use all the limewater he can add, then add the two part back to the amount he needs to maintain alkalinity.

FWIW, limewater from a settled reservoir on an ATO is all that I've used for the past 20 years on my tank.
 
I recently was over picking up a frag from a local reefer and he is running a kalk reactor, CA reactor, and dosing 2 part.

It was the talk that made me realize what sps was all about. Amazing.
