So that happened :(

5 day power outage = Mostly complete Sump Die Off = Massive uncontrollable Algae outbreak that literally strangled my tank to death over the coarse of the next 2 week. I even lost 2 of my 3 prized H. Mags with one still in the "probably not going to make it but not done trying phase". Thankfully my clowns survived or I'm not sure I would have had the heart to continue. I did lose my powder blue though :( . Such is life in reefing.

So time for a reboot I guess:

enter 48x12x12 60 gallon pasture. Wait am I really going to put H.Mags in a 12" tall tank? Lol of coarse I am.

Ups and downs ups and downs. So of coarse I got some Chaeto from a local reefer friend after the fuge crash to get things back going again AND of coarse there had to have been Apstasia on it because I have about 4 million little baby nems sprouting up all throughout my fuge...Insert my new friends 10 Bergy Nudies and 2 Peppy Shrimp. The nudies got here today (not pictured) the shirmp will be here tomorrow.

I did get a few more interesting new friends in today. First on the docket to replace once I was sure the system was stable was my powder blue. He's going to have to live by himself for a little bit, but the last one I got started out about this size and it's funny when I put him up to my mature Foxface to see the difference.

Then we have this guy. He'll be taking up residence in the new tank once he gets out of isolation.

Lastly I thought these looked fun. Needed a little something to get the color going again. Adding the name because I'm likely to forget it if it's not in this thread Blue Sympodium Polyp

I also added a new Duncan as they are one of my favorite softies, but he was still hiding after his bug bath and wasn't ready to come out and say hello yet when I was taking pictures earlier.

For those of you following the Greener Pastures build I'm in the middle of you're already aware I got some ecoBak bio-pellets in today. Nobody probably is because I created that tank thread in the middle of the night, but still it's relevant. After much debate about how I lost everything this last time and how I could prevent it in the future I have decided I'm going to run this tank on Core7 Other Methods, my "Other Methods" are going to be a combination of my bio-pellets and my Fuge and if my fuge doesn't have enough nutrients to compete with the bio-pellets, then I can easily use that space for a display fuge aka more clownfish. The only things I have left are my Mangroves anyways and the Chaeto I got from a local "friend" apparently had some Aiptasia on it so now I have that to deal with in there. Suffice to say I can see a time coming in the probably near future where I will cutoff water flow to sump, vacuum out the entire fuge compartment (again) and just make it it's own little tank.

Sympodium is a coral I have coveted for years, I love the look.
While there are not a lot of corals and fish to deal with I would throw in some peppermint shrimp for any aiptasia issue.
Gorgeous clowns.

Yeah really like the look, I was already ordering a few things from LA and was getting close to covering my shipping so I started browsing because, well you know why, and bam, I was like, sweet. It also tossed me over the limit.

I for sure already got 2 peppys in the sump, they came in yesterday, but as the box was 2 days instead of one day, they didn't get the fanfare of some other things and needed a quicker transfer process.

YAY IT's FINALLY HERE!!!!

So I want to say almost two years ago I bought an Apex Jr. On the cheap off of the exchange here. Basically it's only function in life up to this point has been as an expensive Temp and pH monitor. My tank sits nowhere near an internet connection and I just kept waiting and waiting for a Neptune sponsored Wifi adapter. Well they showed us they weren't much interested in that when they released the new system with built in wifi and further strengthened that statement today with their new all in one testing thing a ma bober that will only be compatible with their newer units. From a customer standpoint, that tends to turn me off a bit. We all know Neptune's stuff is expensive to begin with but a lack of backward compatibility now? This all makes me a sad panda. So in the middle of this "bash Neptune rant" let me show you guys what I'm so excited about.

pO1IfSq.jpg

Wait is that really an addon module for an Apex after I just got done ranting? It absolutely is and I'll tell you why, I feel this is one of the products that Neptune came to market with and set at a price point that hobbyists could wrap their arms around. I didn't feel bent over the counter by this product, which is priced comparably to their dosing containers apparently?

Ironically along with being in the Navy, as a civilian I was an automation engineer. The reason this is ironic is because I don't run any of my systems off of automation. Now that statement isn't completely true, I have many many things in my tank which are automated, but they are not all tied into a single system. I kind of like it that way, and that's what works for me. That said I have been eying the Profilux 4 system and may eventually decide to go that route. The nice thing about my little Apex Jr. though is I can simply move it around at ease from tank to tank throughout the house and check different things, like for example PAR. And here is where we tie it all in. Now that we're going with a MUCH shallower tank I can't rely on assumed PAR levels based on pendant height, spread....etc. I need some actual number when working with corals so close to the surface of the water. Hopefully my next post is a map of the par readings throughout my tank!!!

Ok NOW we're cooking with gas.

Ok not going to lie, that was probably the best $300 I have spent in a long time. I set the light to the value I normally run them at, adjusted the height of the fixtures a little bit to get numbers I was happy with then it was just recording data from there. Something tells me 264 PAR for a duncan is a little overkill, but he was previously getting 108. I'll probably move him forward a little closer to that 117 spot. I'm pretty happy with the Sympodium sitting at 193, that may be a little too strong, but I'll see how they react tomorrow. I'll probably move him up closer to that 133 spot in front of him. Ideally though I wanted to dial all my rockwork in to be between 200-325 PAR and I did a pretty good job of that. I believe that is some type of Riccordia sitting at 155 He was tiny when I got him and I think he was a throw in, but somehow he managed to survive the crash along with the orange Acan that's sitting on 174 and the green one at 171. How I lost simple things like Hammers but managed to keep two Acans I'll never know.

I'll get some better pictures in the next week or so once I add some more corals. Wasn't going to break out the DSLR for PAR readings. At least now I have a good base to work from. Now I just need to get my chemistry in check so I can start adding these:

Good news is we should have some corals tomorrow. For now all you guys get is a picture of the sump and a parameter update. This is after taking a grocery store plastic bag full of Chaeto out. Just to give you guys an idea of size, my entire sump was made out of a 75G tank and the fuge section itself holds about 28G. Which now that I've got to the 60G display is about half the volume of the display. Prime candidate for regular Triton method, but no way do I want to rely on a fuge again as my ONLY nutrient export method, even if it was working well.

You can still see some residue on the back and side walls from the massive dieoff that happened with the crash. At least I still have my mangroves.

So we're looking good as we wait for the coral shipment tomorrow.

pH 8.12
Alk 10.2
Ca 425
Mg 1500

I'll probably have to dose some calcium over the next few days as I wait for the Alk to fall far enough to start Triton dosing. Think I'm going to try to shoot for a middle ground of 7.5dKH.

Cool tank! What did you get?

Making fantastic progress. Have I told you how beautiful those clowns are. :p

Oh you know, stuff and things :P. I need to break out the DSLR in a little bit. I just got my hands out of superglue not too long ago. Hopefully pictures tonight. Well definitely at least a few :P

I know I know. Like I seriously would have considered quitting this hobby if I lost my pair of clowns. I think I MAYBE could have stood it had I lost the male, but the female is my crowned jewel.

I suck at da cameras but here ya gos. It's been a while since I set my white balance on my DSLR for tank shots so I just did most of it post processing, though not very well. Either way I'll get it dialed in soon.

Basically we have a handful of Acros, a good number of millies which I tend to prefer over acros, a few stylos because why not and I love me some different colored birdsnest. Everything on the rocks has got good PE and is doing well. The stuff on the ground is stuff I'm still watching. I can say having this PAR meter makes placing these things a breeze. I can find a PAR number they are happy with on the bottom then move them to a corresponding spot on the rocks. The tank still looks so naked without an H. Mag in it :( I'm working on it though. Definitely saved a spot for 1 or maybe two, we'll have to see.

Also worth noting Powder Blue is happily out of iso, but sadly the shrimp didn't make it.

3 AI 26s, not the HDs

This is the current settings, I'd heave to measure to see how far off the water they are.

LOL I'm such a goober sometimes, where are my manners? @Robin Haselden I've talked with you so much over the last week I forgot to welcome you to the Pasture. Glad to have you along for the ride.

@tacosricos Very pleased to have you here as well. I very much like what you did with your mangrove. Being from South Florida I've always wanted to make a mini "mangrove island" style tank. Did you convert yours over to fresh water completely or is it brackish?

In regards to tank grow out I think I'm done adding hard stuff, with the exception of some yellow and a little more green. I don't know exactly what yet, but I'll know it when I see it.

In regards to inhabitants, I've been doing a lot of thinking on this. I'm thinking I'll pick up a pair of Exquisite Fairy Wrasse if LA would ever get them back in stock. I very much like the Fiji variant of them. My other thought was a pair of Exquisite firefish. I'll more then likely keep my eyes open for both. I also plan on jumping on the next pair of Blood Red Fire Shrimp.

Once those are added I think I would consider myself capped out on moving animals. So far though, that's the plan all laid out in soft jell-o

Thanks! The tank is full freshwater, though I've always loved the idea of doing a brackish tank. I find the simplicity of the FW aquarium re*fresh*ing in comparison to my reef tanks. Things start to look a little hairy and I just *bam* hit with a water change. No testing, no refractometers. I actually left the tank outside for an entire summer once and when I brought it inside again it looked better than ever (and had a bunch of new invertebrates living in it).

I'm excited to see how the triton additives work out for you, as I'm strongly considering going that way with my 65 gal build and am in the process of convincing one of my friend/clients to convert his 300 gal tank over to triton.

So for those of you following along, you may have noticed my sand is going absolutely crazy. Well it was going absolutely crazy. One of the consequences of having such a shallow tank is that even if I am creating a gyre flow pattern, the force with which the water returns across the bottom of the tank is great enough to pretty much take my sand bed and try to pile it all underneath my gyre itself.

JilVQm3.jpg

Welp we solved that problem. I thought about going completely bare bottom, but it's just not my thing, so 4 pieces of 24x12 tile did the job.

Also worth mentioning that Alkalinity has finally dropped enough that I can start dosing my Triton Core7 Other Methods stuff. My dKH this morning was exactly 8.04 and with dosing over the last few days I've held my Calcium pretty stable and it was at 430ppm this morning. As it stands right now my tank is uptaking in the neighborhood of .1dKH per day. According to the dosing instructions on the bottle I should dose 2ml/100l. From the calcium that I was dosing I'm guestimating my water volume at right around 100g which works itself out to about 378l which works itself out to around 5.somethingsomethingsomething yeah whatever, 5ml it is.

Another thing to note, Diver's Den had a Purple with Yellow tipped H. Mag last night!!!! Those tips look white to me, but the description said yellow so we'll see when it gets here. Either way one down, probably 1 to go.

My clowns are going to be so darn excited to have a home back I'm betting I'm going to have to beat them off of it while it settles in. That's the beautiful thing about clowns and natural hosts. It surely doesn't take them long to find the nem and hop right in. Hopefully it entices them to start spawning again as they haven't done so since they lost their home.

I also took advantage of the Ecotech sale and picked up 2MP40s over the weekend as I always felt they were priced too high, but at 15% off I feel they're much more in line with what I consider a good price for what they are.

Oh I almost forgot, ordered some PODs as well.

And for those wondering how my current Fuge is doing, here's a side by side of the picture I posted on the 29th and one I took this morning. This is a week and that is a 40 gallon fuge.

For those of you who remember I added biopellets to the system on August 24th. They recommend starting at 1/3 desired amount and slowly increasing. Well I had been checking on them every couple of days and yesterday noticed they had stopped tumbling all together. Keep in mind I'm using them in a regular BRS reactor and not one designed for pellets. None the less they started to clog and were basically all just sitting still as the little mj1200 that comes with those things just couldn't push enough water in there to make them tumble....so I tapped off my return line, increased the flow from my Jecod 8000 and put the rest of the pellets in there that are supposed to be. I'm going to give it a week and if they start clogging again, I may run a reactor full of carbon prior to the biopellet reactor which should act as a decent filter for catching any of the gunky stuff which seemed to be causing the pellets to clog up. This is kind of one of those thing where I wish I could just stick some type of screen filter almost like a fuel filter on a car in front of it to keep the gunk out and just the water in, but I think I can accomplish the same thing with the carbon and I've always got carbon running when I have zoas or Nems in a system anyways so...

Either way today is maintenance day. I need to take my RODI container outside and clean it, remove most all of that Chaeto...etc.

Looking good man!
