If nitrite is really 20 ppm, then while I do not know, that value may be high enough to slow the conversion of ammonia.

If true, a couple of water changes followed by a small (back to 2 ppm) ammonia addition could be a good plan.

Or you can just wait and monitor ammonia for a few days and see if it is falling.

I would not add fish now, even after water changes.

yea i don't plan too i will test ammonia again in 2 days and see if it has moved any

so how much dr tims ammonium chloride should i add if 4 drops per gallon is a crazy amount

While I have seen reports of issues with Dr Tims ammonia, I cannot be sure what is the cause of it (change in formulation and not directions accompanying it, inaccurate manufacture, inaccurate testing).

I would suggest reading the Dr Tims directions in detail, which does discuss what to do if nitrite is very high (#8)

8 x 2.7 = 21.6
2.19 ammonia still in the tank

doing 50% water change soon should bring ammonia to 1.08 and nitrite to 11

if that 1.08 nitrite is gone by 2morrow night am i safe to add fish? or shall i let nitrite convert

I'm more concern with ensuring that ammonia declines rapidly than worrying about the nitrite level.

I personally would not rely on what it "must" have done, but on what I can measure it to do with ammonia.

Probably. Tim seems to think that nitrite, if accurate, is enough to deter nitrifying bacteria.

So cycle defo stalled just checked and ammonia is 1.05ppm it has converted 0.02 ammonia in 12 hours

The hanna ULR nitrite checker (just ordered and arrived today) is blinking 200ppb

the hanna HR nitrite checker is reading 18ppm

think im going to do x2 50% water changes today get nitrite down to 4.5

Pretty much 100% WC done apart from the bit at the bottom i could not get going to test nitrite + ammonia in 45 mins then add 10 drops of ammonia chloride see where it takes me

ok so just tested nitrites and still saying they are 5ppm even tho i did like 95% WC
