I've had the same experience. This was mostly true when I used to much GFO and filled it 2/3 of the way full. When I put less in it did the same thing but the very top layer would tumble still while the rest remained in place.

Don't know all the details, but someone in our local club just posted something regarding NextReef has gone out of business. He said there's a few of their products still available in some vendors' stock, but getting harder to find.

What brand gfo are you using?
I am using BRS Bulk GFO from their website. I bought it when I bought the reactor but I didn't use it for like six months until my tank was ready. I didn't open it up though.. so I don't know if it goes bad or not. I have it mounted about 2' up inside my cabinet but the outflow is still strong for the pump size.

No it doesnt go bad. I use phosban and it tumbles fine. Ive never used the brs, so i dont know if it has bigger media. I agree, something doesnt add up.

As a last resort, switch gfo. But, you shouldnt have to.

I'm curious, how long before 2smallfishies failed? I've had them for over 2 years, I change the o-rings every 6 months and always lubricated them with o-ring silicone (like for my underwater camera rig). The only issue I have had was before I started regularly changing the o-rings, over time the canisters got difficult to align and seal.
I'm running the larger ones, on a 180gallon display/40 gallon sump.
anyone else have issues? I'd rather anticipate than react.

also, the media (esp.gfo) should appear to be simmering at the surface. Once a week I open the valve on the pump fully to 'shake up' the GFO, but then turn it down again to simmer

The kids of my TLF reactors started to crack after about 6 months. Full disclosure I could have been over tightening.
However, if a deal breaks, or the rubber connectors fray/crack, or really anything goes south AND your reactors are outside the sump you will have a catastrophic tank failure and likely ruin your floors

I use the next reef reactors there nice and easy to clean and fill but recently was a LFS near Chicago and they carried the Bashsea line of media reactors. Build quality was really nice

I am actually using one of the Avast new reactors.. It's an awesome little piece of equipment! It is vastly different for many reasons(and benefits), but one of the main points that makes it so easy, is that you simply lift the reaction chamber out of the other, without any screws, etc.. Also, it literally "moves" the media slowly, and i mean "all" of the media, without any bypass, and it is fully and easily adjustable! And you decide whether you want recirculation or single pass..
I am working on my little video review of the unit. But it should be on the market around Thanksgiving. But it is unlike any reactor i have ever used or seen..
And it is working great with the same gfo I had in my standard "tube" reactor(my levels actually went lower, and this is gfo that had been in the old reactor for a few weeks).
It is only using a sicce 0.5 to turn over 14oz of media in my system(210 gallon twv). And this is with a ball valve only half open.. So it will utilize effectively much, much more media..

I got the Vertex for a build I'm planning. Although, I have yet to actually use them I can speak to the quality of materials and build. They are not even comparable to my old TLF reactors. These things are solid, beautifully crafted, and certainly made to last. They make the TLFs look like one of my old school DIY projects..
