BIOCUBE CALLOUT!!

Do past tanks count? I had a BC29 for a while that I ran a Current 4bulb T5 on, got rid of the lid that came with the cube. I also had an internal mini protein skimmer, a koralia powerhead, and controlled by a RKL.

Unfortunately I just recently inherited a cube from a friend who was in the hospital ill and passed away a little over a week ago. I was maintaining the tank for him while he was hospitalized for the last month and a half. I hadn't planned on another tank being that I have a larger tank already but i knew if the worse case scenario happened I would probably have to bring it to my home. So last Saturday a couple of days after he passed away I broke his tank down and bought it to my home and set it back up all in the same day. Fortunately I didn't have any issues and everything went smoothly.
I'm new to the whole biocube cube thing, used to having a large tank and sump, so I while maintaining my larger tank and going by full teaspoons and 5ml increments I have to now keep in mind that this tank needs smaller 1/4 and 1/2 teaspoon increments.
Anyways, as something to remember him by, I plan on keeping this tank and all of the livestock for the longterm. I couldn't imagine seeing the tank broken down and the livestock distributed or broken up.
His tank has been running and very stable for the most part over the last 5 years. When he first set it up, the hood with power compact lighting was removed and replaced with a Steves Led retro kit. At over the next 4 years he mostly grew sps and a few zoas which all did well. This pas year he changed the lighting over to t5's and was transitioning the tank into mostly lps and zoas/palys. I've added a few frags from my tank to grow out and hopefully fill in some of the empty spaces ( couple of sps frags and some more zoas/palys).
Anyways, sorry for the long post, just wanted to give a little background on the tank.

Equipment:
Lighting- aquaticlife 4 bulb T5
Powerhead- RW 4
Chamber 1- Aqueon Pro 100 w heater
Chamber 2- In Tank Media basket ( filter pads, GAC, GFO)
Chamber 3- Chaeto in media basket
Chamber 4- Cobalt/MJ-1200 return pump
There is a tunze skimmer that he bought for the tank but he only ran it for a short time before removing it for whatever reasons. Not sure if I will add the skimmer back to the tank.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I recently lost a close friend to leukemia. It's pretty cool that you have his tank. What do you think of that MJ-1200? I'm looking into purchasing one for my BC29.

Thank you. Second friend I've lost in a month.
The MJ 1200 hundred seems to be the right size for the tank. It has good flow through the return and with double nozzles on the loc line it distributes the water nice.
Combined with the rw-4, there's almost no dead spots in the tank. He had a vortech mp 10 on the tank when it was mostly sps but with lps and zoas, everything was closed up all the time even on lower settings.
What are using for your return?

I'm still running the stock return pump, and it defiantly does not cut it. I am planning on ordering a new one this Friday. I don't have the funds for a vortech right now, so i'll have to just buy a cheap circulation pump for now.

Question about the Biocube 29 lights. I just purchased this tank over the weekend. I'm a rookie when it comes to Saltwater. Was looking to go with a 75 gallon but I'm going to get my feet wet first with the Biocube. Do you leave the blue LED lights on during the night? The guy where I purchased the cube said it's supposed to mimic the moonlight. I've been diving at night and never saw that much moonlight shine through so I was wanting to see what everyone else is doing.

I don't have any pictures yet but I will get some and get them posted on here.

Thanks in advance

The t5 unit that is over the biocube I have came with moonlights. My friend was running them for a couple hours after all of the lights went out. I stopped running them when I brought the tank home being that I don't run moonlights on my other tank either.
It's really up to the individual if they want to simulate moonlight or not.

Has anyone had problems with Turbo Snails in their biocubes? I've heard they are good at getting the algae out but can also knock everything over in the process.

Hello fellow BC owners! I've had my BC29 for only about 5 months now but it has been going strong since the very beginning. I changed out the PCs for some LED strips, removed all bio-balls, added the inTank media basket & fuge with the JBJ nano-glo LED, and am running the AquaticLife 115 skimmer with the airline mod and magnet mount. For my circulation, I've left the stock return pump and added 2 425 powerheads.

pdt7361, where did you get your LED strips?

@pdt7361
Did you have to mod anything to get the aquatilife 115 to fit? How do you like it? I'm planing on ordering one this Friday?

@Beechnut72 - The LED strips are TrueLumen Pros - 3 Marine Fusion and 2 Blue. I gutted everything out of the hood with the exception of the fans and one power module to run them. I had a glass shop cut me a piece of 1/8 acrylic to fit inside the splash guard and used the existing screw mounts to attach the acrylic. Then I used that nice clean flat surface to attached the LED strips. The 2 small strips on the sides are the stock LEDs that I relocated to the side and then added a blue stunner strip to the bottom - the smaller LED strips are my moonlights.

@BlackFish - I didn't have to mod the tank at all to have the Aquaticlife fit. When I moved to the magnet mount, I went ahead and used a dremmel to shave down the mounting bracket just to make it all fit better.
