Birdnest coralHELP!!!

Seems reliable and has good reviews.. hmm do you have any way to test for iron or copper?
Doesn’t need to test for iron or copper, lol

anyway how long has the tank been up and any other sps? My guess your tank is just too new.
Stop testing ammonia and nitrite as well. Testing for nitrites was done like 20 years ago and it’s been proven to not have a major effect on a marine animals.

Ya tank is too new for any sps. Wait until about 6 months and try a birds nest again. May even take about a year just don’t rush things as a newbie. Keep all your params stable and in time, things should work out.
Yea makes sense. It’s hard tho because as someone who doesn’t know they trust people at fish stores. And sometimes they say oh yea put this in it’s fine. Then another guy says oh no after I bought it. I try hard to educate myself but I find in this hobby there are sooo many different views. I have held back on antípodas because I know my tank is too fresh. so I take it the birds nest falls into that category aswell.
Well I hope this one doesn’t die, if it does I’ll put one in next summer.

When in doubt check here before you buy, even while at the lfs. If I see something I’m not if I always come here do a quick search while I’m walking around looking at stuff, just to be sure and not buy something that is just going to die or wreak havoc on other inhabitants!

Birdsnest is a pretty easy SPS but your tank is probably going through biological changes still. If you got some microbater7 you can try dosing that to try and speed up the procwas.

Yea so I just got out of the diatom rusty orange look. And now everything is bright green.

In my early stage I dosed everyday until I did the whole bottle. You think another bottle is a good idea?
I’m certainly not an expert but it’s my belief diverse bacteria colonies are what ultimately lead to tank stability and a food source for coral as well. I do rountinely add m7 to my tanks.

can always ask around here for our opinion , if you are unsure next time !

Thanks loverock
if you want to speed up , your tanks maturity , you can try getting a few pounds of live rock straight from the ocean such as kp aquatics, gulf live rock, and tampa bay , which unforuanely just shut down, altohugh they do come with a few crabs and some whelk snails aip, majanos, undesirable stuff .

I’ll work on my patience. Lol

Your tank is too young. I bet it's having major alk/ph swings without you realizing it. Honestly, I kinda want to start a messenger just for newbies to ask the "hey, I'm at the store, I wanna buy this, what do you think?" Questions. I'd be down to help lol

Stability is key so testing routinely is important especially while your tank is maturing. As previously mentioned ammonia and nitrite aren’t necessary to test but keep testing your other parameters. Your tank looks nice. Be patient, you’ll be able to grow SPS in due time. Best of luck and happy reefing!

Realistically,MOST sps should not be added until you get to about 6-8 months,or you see purple coralline algae growing. Its a very good indication of stability and maturity in a system.

I personally have added way earlier, and had probelms and then had great success. You can't always go off of people success stories, well because the ending to every book ever written is never the same.

There could be metals leeching into the systems, stray voltage, instabilities. If you alk is really 13,that could be a problem. If other parameters are not in line with it,it will cause problems like you are seeing.

Every day new things are learned about how parameters are connected and if one goes up or down it effects 1-2 params with it. So its important to pay close attention.

I always used my more finicky sps as an indicator if something was off. If things browned,I knew the check this,if things stn'd or rtn'd I knew to check that so on and all that.

Having a reef tank is like having a happy and healthy marriage. KEEP IT HAPPY TO KEEP IT HEALTHY !!!

I’ll hold you to it!! Thanks

My alk is between 7.5 - 8

Okay,I saw like 13.7 or something above lol. I had bad batch of Red Sea Coral Pro salt and it murdered my whole pico slap full of acro's once.

Could potentially be a bad batch of salt too. Could have heavy metals in it from the manufacturing process.
