Looks real similar. Is he black and white on his skin?![]()
This dude is like 3" diameter and about the same height.
Yep!Looks real similar. Is he black and white on his skin?
Put the rocks in a bucket and filled it up until it almost overflows. Take the rocks out, then measure how much water I have to add in to get it to almost overflow. Not 100% precise but close enough.I’m most curious to see how you plan to measure the displacement Cody. Add to a full bucket and measure how much spills out?
Or do you have a really large beaker?
That's about what I estimate. My 125 plus 40 gallon sump (about 2/3 full) runs about 100 gallons after rocks, sand, equipment, etc. I estimated 100 gallons and dosed based on that and then tested and was almost spot on. I think I'm probably closer to 95 gallons but...I'm curious to see how well y'all do. A lot of folks grossly over-estimate how much water is actually in their system.
For instance, let's look at a standard 150 gallon tank. The dimensions are 60"x24"x24". Multiple those dimensions then divide by 231 (cubic inches in a gallon) and you get 149.61 gallons. Neat! However, those are the outside dimensions. Let's back out the 5/8" thick glass. Ooopppsss. There went roughly 15 gallons just with the glass! That brings us to 135.25 gallons. Oh! But that's with the tank completely full! Let's drop that an inch and a half. Uh oh! That brings us down to 126.57 gallons, and that's before the rocks, sand, corals, fish, etc are put in! The reality is that the 150 gallon display is probably only holding maybe 100 gallons of water in most cases.
Just something to think about when y'all are doing your calculations.

NEW GAME
DISPLACED
Think you know how much water is actually in your system? Time to see how well you can guess how much water is displaced by the rocks! For this game, guess how many gallons of water you think 20.6 pounds of Marco Dry Rock will displace. Guess to the nearest tenth (ex. 10.2, 14.6, etc.). The closest without going over wins a $50 GIFT CARD!!!
One entry per person. In the event of a tie, the wheel will pick the winner. The game goes until the start of the sale on Saturday then the winner will be announced shortly after. Good luck!
Standard 125 and 40 breeder sump? I'll do some rough maths for you. That's about what I estimate. Standard 125, approximately 40 gallon sump (Eshopps - I forget which one), about 100 pounds of rock, 60 pounds of sand...Standard 125 and 40 breeder sump? I'll do some rough maths for you.
I'm not going to do the rock and sand yet until I post the results of this game. It gives you a rough idea per pound of how many gallons rock displaces. I would need to do another for the sand.Standard 125, approximately 40 gallon sump (Eshopps - I forget which one), about 100 pounds of rock, 60 pounds of sand...
I just heard that a handful of y'all have already bought some of these gorgeous suckers! Who all is getting one?! I got my Gem Tang yesterday so I'm officially in the club. Y'all wanna make matching jackets?!![]()
HERE IS A DOOR BUSTER DEAL TO GET THINGS STARTED.
I think the glass is 3/8".I'm not going to do the rock and sand yet until I post the results of this game. It gives you a rough idea per pound of how many gallons rock displaces. I would need to do another for the sand.
What thickness of glass does your tank have? What are the outside dimensions? Sometimes they goof a little on sizes. I'd need the same for your breeder. Also, what"s the gap between the water and the top?
