I have always had a Yamaha receiver. I have Klipsch speakers. Turntables are easy to find and are reasonably priced. Browse Crutchfield Home Audio. They have decent, affordable stuff. Unfortunately, my hearing is going, so music doesn't sound all that great to me now. Too many years of hanging out with musician friends and standing too close to speakers, I guess. So, don't get him anything that gets too loud.

Vinyl seems to be making a come back. Our son (23) is into it big time now. He loves to tell us all about whatever album he picked up and added to his collection. It's funny when he asks if we wanted to come over and check out the sound that comes off of an album. He must think we are to young for albums...I won't tell him any different.
