Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

Hello;

This is what is painfully scary to full reef systems. The fact that anything wet and even aerial can infect a display tank is scary. As I mentioned I don’t add new fish because I had this false impression I would keep ick and marine velvet out of my tank. Knowing that it can spread by anything wet, and even aerial makes things kinda hard.

It’s almost like if a new fish is purchased, it goes in for up to 30 days for observation. Now that we can not dip corals and inverts, you would have to transfer them to a aka holding tank for observation. The fact velvet can lay dormant etc your new fish or coral may spend 60 days to 90 days in a separate tank. Doing a fresh water dip helps but no proof it’s rid of the disease. I definitely want to do more research on acrIflsvine-ms. It would be nice to find something that is universal because we have so little time.

What’s aggravating is even if we qt and do a fresh water dip on fish, there is still potential risk. There is potential risk on corals and or anything wet that can transfer. I find it hard enough to keep one tank not alone a hospital tank then an intermediary tank then the main display. Plus we are not even sure we can get rid of it.
@Hemmdog man I'm sorry @Scurvy can you give advice. I know you just we t through a similar experience.

@Sarah24! Part of the problem is that dinoflagellates are both good And bad. The bad is ich ,velvet and the variety that bloom in the tanks. The good are the ones that host coral. How do we distinguish between the good and the bad when we treat. They go dormant during stress. The reason blackouts don't work with blooms in the tank. Metro will cause this as well but will buy time. That's what I did in my reef and fowlr systems. Velvet brought in from a bicolor. Harbough died a day later. I dosed metro and was able to pick up copper the next day. Just my two cents.

By the way that's very generous of you on the clowns

Hello,

We need something faster than copper atm, have we considered hydrogen peroxide? Doing 35% dose may provide you long enough to keep them alive? I know people have dosed this in the reef tanks and corals are upset but it doesn’t kill them. I’m working on a source to make sure (one says 35% another says 20% of water volume).
I’m planning on removing all the rocks to catch the fish and put the fish in a hospital tank. I don’t want to dose anything on my reef.

Crap! Crap! Crap!
Possibly a false alarm, It looks more like precipitation in the tank now that I look closer. I’ll most likely put all these fish through the hospital system as well just to be safe. Start from scratch with no disease systems and clean fish. What’s the best way to sterilize all my equipment; feeding containers that have tank water, water change hoses, nets, all that stuff?

I am a fan of bleach.

Hello;

I would say bleach or h2o2 hydrogen peroxide would be ideal. But you will still have the risk from your corals
And live rock. Not sure I understand why you will redo the main display? Yes I see removing rocks etc to catch the fish, but unless you know the source, cleaning it and then using your same coral and live rock may not solve anything. I may be missing the obvious here lol (kinda what happens when your up for 24 hours).

What do you mean redo? I just meant in general how do I sterilize my nets and stuff. I’ll have the main display fallow.

Bleach. I can see the contract confusion with redo and bleaching rocks. You talked Bout pulling out all the rocks to catch the fish and the next post you talked about sterilization. Up for 24hrs I can see the mix up

Hello,

Lol see I knew I was tired. Honestly for my I would throw them away and buy new ones, but that’s me. If it’s just nets and easy stuff I would not think twice. But if they are super expensive etc then I would make one potent bleach bucket bath and let them soak. As a better thought I would use them for the sick tank and have a new set for the display that way you don’t cross contamination. Paint the handles red for dangerous and leave the other ones normal. That way you still have something to catch fish with in your sick tank.

Hey everybody!! Sorry been out of touch with r2r. The new job as been kind of hectic and have had a lot of extra time. I'm not about to try and catch up on the over 30 pages I'm behind. Anything important I missed?

I'm guessing you meant to say you've have NOT had a lot of extra time! :D

Also, by definition, everything that happens on this thread is important and, often, the non-reefing related stuff is more importanter!

Happy you're back!

@Manose is there anywhere here in Knoxville that carries your salt? I have a truck...they do let me out of Knox county.
No as mine came from South Carolina in Columbia at https://www.aquariumspecialty.com/ . I get a very uneasy feeling when I drive through Jefferson City so I will avoid that part of the state till the day I day and even then I will not go through it :P
