My thoughts - I tried a frag section in my 40B sump on my 140. I had a real hard time keeping it clean enough and generally just became useless for frags. Also, the light I used was an Evergrow LED and within a year, the lamp had severe corrosion, even though there really wasn't any splash getting to where it was. I would suggest a remote frag system, if at all possible.On a more serious note, I've seriously been struggling with a sump design for my new build. I think I'm settled finally but still have my doubts. This new build is honestly way out of my wheelhouse and I'm not sure of which equipment or filtration methods I want to implement.
This is the set up of a friend of mine and he just added a (Advanced Acrylics) remote frag tank this weekend. I thought it came out great and is definitely not an eyesore. NOTE: There isn't a lot of growth in the tank yet, since it is only 4 months old.
Have you ever considered using an algae turf scrubber instead of a small refugium? I have a dry Turbo Aquatics scrubber, so I can't recommend that from personal experience, but a friend has the Clearview Scrubber from BRS and he loves it. I think you would get better results in such a small space.
I am one of those that believes the larger the better for refugiums. I had great luck with one on my 75, but it was a 30 gallon refugium that was chock full of macro algae. You can see the green growth in the DIY refugium behind my sump on my 75 in the photo. It sat on a pedestal between the back of the tank and the wall. There was zero algae in my display.
This was my 40B sump that I built. The frag section was on the far right side. I did not use a refugium on this tank.
It may look good, but turned into a death pit for frags.
You can see the frag section (with adjustable shelving) on the right. Not shown in this pic was the MP-10, so it had plenty of flow and light.

First off, I should have pointed out that the picture was taken somewhere around 2004, so it was a homemade deal. It was easy to get into. The display tank was a little more than a foot away from the wall. I just had to move the light fixture (which was just a plant Grow Light) and remove one of the tops on the tank and grabbed a handful or two. I am pretty lazy, so I try to make sure I have decent access to everything. This is another picture of it.

Yeah, he knows his stuff. He has a masters in marine biology and worked for a few years in the Florida Keys, replacing indigenous coral frags back on the reef. Cool young dude.

Hippie kid is getting some zoas tomorrow. Yellow and orange colors. I did my first auction. It will jump start his pico tank. Going in the cube first. He and I pooled our money we had left from Florida.
