Bryopsis Cure: My Battle With Bryopsis Using Fluconazole

Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

It did affect my cheato growth in the end. I had huge amounts of cheato growing and even during the process it was still growing and fine. Several weeks after the start i noticed the cheato dissipating and getting thinner, looser, breaking apart. Its at a point now where i might need to get more cheato from someone to start a new batch and this batch was affected by the flucanazloe. i would still do it all over it again if i had too and hopefully i dont. I did lose some fish in the interum also but i attribute it to turning off the UV sterilizer and no water change, no skimmer, just plain dirty untreated water for two weeks which mabe in most tanks would do fine but with my bioload it wasnt. still a great product.

I'm not good at documenting, but the pictures below just no algae anymore

How long did it take...put in the floro on Monday...?

5 days. .... gone [emoji4] All that's left is a few stumps from the roots. My PO4 had shot up from 0.03 to 1 but that's expected. So give it a another 8 days then a water change and back on track ...... again [emoji9]

Sweeeet!

Make sure to maintain a positive NO3 level to go with that PO4 to make sure desirable stuff is able to grow back strong to prevent any reoccurrence of the B-word (or worse)!

At least 2 ppm NO3 would be nice.....5 ppm shouldn't be a problem. With PO4 that high you might have to be active in maintaining NO3 with something like KNO3. Be ready...do not let NO3 "zero out" at all if you can help it though.

:)

I would be more worried about dinos showing up(some say they are in all of our tanks) if you zero out your NO3 with higher PO4 than a recurrence of Bryopsis.

Lowering or raising your nutrients didn't have an effect on bryopsis and there is no desirable stuff that is going to grow back in your tank to prevent a recurrence of bryopsis. It's not like dinos where everyone says to raise your nutrients or allow good bacteria/pods/creatures to out-compete the dinos. This doesn't happen with Bryopsis. If you kill all of the bryopsis,it won't return because of your nutrient levels. As we have already discussed there is also no such thing as spontaneous generation of bryopsis without it coming from a bryopsis cell to begin with. Kill all of the bryopsis and don't reintroduce it into your system.

I still don't have any bryopsis in my tank and I've raised and lowered both NO3 and PO4 battling dinos. Bryopsis didn't return with my abundance of nutrients because it's gone.

Will do, as before I'll keep dosing bactobalance. Last time plus with vibrant didn't have dinos or cyano and put this down to dosing organic po4 and no3 via bactobalance.

Posting for the sake of observations made:
I did two separate doses of Fluconazole, the first being March 1. I had not noticed prior because my hair algae is insane, but today I noticed that my coarse, thick turf algae is completely gone.

Maybe these questions have already come up. How long do I keep skimmer cap and carbon reactor off? And when can I turn UV back on the Radions?

I replaced my skimmer cup after 3 days and waited to run my carbon until after the treatment. I would just run your lights as you normally would. UV doesn't seem to degrade the meds.

...supposed to be via prescription, but there are a number of URL's listed in the thread.

....even in the FAQ in the first post the last time I checked.

I think in the USA you need a prescription from a vet, don't you?

No our vet said that as long as it's for fish there was a legal loophole (as he called it) in place. He said of course there is a fine legal line there as he knew many people bought those same meds for human consumption since he had been asked many times if they were safe for humans to take.
