Bryopsis Cure: My Battle With Bryopsis Using Fluconazole

Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

I changed my filter socks to mess socks during treatment so I'm not sure if others have ran their regular sock or not. If it's coming back I would say enough of the meds were removed somehow to allow it to regrow. Nobody else has had this happen yet.
Should I go ahead and do a WC, remove socks and do another full treatment?

Honestly since we can add the same amount that we are using everyday for ten days straight(and we only use 1 dose) if we were treating our fish for infection, I would go ahead with another full dose without a water change and just continue the treatment. Some people have ran the treatment for 18-21 days so you being 7 days in is still not to far gone to have to start over.

Awesome, going to add more now. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the link everyone. $80 is the price two gallons of Tech-M cost eight years ago. I can deal with that.

Rick, I would have broke down the tank and nuked the rock long before spending a grand on algea.
I think a lot of people would lol. Some are tenacious that never give up [emoji14] and in Rick's case it's a good thing he didn't because he has his tank back as it should be plus, he would not have told me and others about this thread that are seeing success with this medication :D

I was thinking... some of us have super thick mats of this stuff. I was wondering about the amount of medication that attacks it. If we pulled as much of the thick mats that we could out if that would help it along and make it go away faster. I might give it a shot because I don't think anyone else has yet.

Also about meds possibly getting stuck in the socks. I think if the socks aren't changed daily that yes it could happen. I have homemade socks because my socks fit over 2 drain lines coming into my sump and they're held up by a dowel rod that spans across the sump. In order to have mesh socks I would have to go buy the material and I was not able to do that quick enough before dosing the system. So I have been changing mine out daily. Personally I feel like the medication should have dissolved well enough to pass through the socks unless they get so clogged that water doesn't pass through them which is waiting too long to change the sock anyhow.

I ran mesh (always do) from day one of treatment, swapped them out daily and had no effect.

Just an observation, not scientific as i cant isolate the product. I had two very small patches of green turf algea, this has now started to turn white from the tips down, on day 6 after treatment.

There is no sign of this "whitening" on my red turf algea.

Unfortunately I'm also dosing Vibrant so cant say which is having the effect. Either way its dieing in the same manner as bryopsis.

The only evidence that it maybe Fluconazole over vibrant is with vibrant the algae in the tank (pre Fluconazole dosing) showed no signs of whitening at the tips, it more detached.

My red turf algea turned darker and threw up micro bubbles with vibrant, then started to detach in the light covered areas.

Again, just observation. But the combination of both looks like a resolve for green turf algea [emoji1306]

I have filter socks and I've been changing them every 2 days and I am on Day 7. Bryopsis is gone, gha is turning more white/grey on a daily basis. I'm also running my skimmer, never turned it off, even when I first added Flucon.

I have to agree lighting is helping. I have t5 plus led over half my frag tank and that area is showing signs of dying out.

Day 5 and high light areas are dying finally!! I forgot to say I forgot to take out my bag of phosguard not sure if that took some of the meds out.

Parameters are all the same.

Observations;
More locations turning white or lightening. Some areas like around the top of the return look to have been eaten or dissolved. The 2 control locations are still dark and appear to still be growing. They are at the bottom and I won't be turning up the leds so not to burn any corals. T5s are at full power and par in that location is about 180 except for shaded areas which some of this is in. I did pull a little bit out that was between my overflows at the bottom because it was at least four inches long and really thick. I simply did not want it to try to out-compete so I pulled it. However it is all that I pulled out. I lso found a bunch of white pieces floating throughout the tank and hung up on some corals so I'm taking this is a good sign!

And I am going to also watch and compare this area. Algae is attached and killing this yellow porites and around the yellow caroliniana table that you can see behind it.

The bryopsis in my nano tank melted into a matted mess. I used a turkey baster to blast it apart. It didn't seem to make a change in the rate of dying. I am on Day 10. I still have a bunch of stalks left.

What lighting are you running @KenO ?

I build my own. I use to own a company where I built custom LED light systems for clients. Most of my LED's are CREE except for my UV LED's. I use UV, Blue, Royal Blue, White, Red and Green LED's that are tied into a sunrise/sunset controller. The Bryopsis I had and my GHA are on the glass on the right side near the pink birds nest. I have all this packed into my 45 gallon. I am in a rental, new house build is behind schedule by 6 months. I had hoped to have the contents of this tank into a bigger tank by now.

What lighting are you running on the two tanks?

The bryopsis under the monti seems to have started growing back, the only thing I did out of the ordinary was remove my filter socks because they were clogged and overflowing. Today (after some guidance) I grabbed some more capsules and mixed them with some rodi and did another full treatment of fluconazole. My phosphate seems to have stopped increasing now so my planned water change is no longer going to happen.

The small patch of GHA still seems to be on the decline (higher par) and the bubble algae is still present but there are a few that look lighter in color but there are also some that look exactly the same as before treatment.

I think I mentioned I have a 45g that is at the end of cycling that algae came back from the previously used rock from my DT. It had been cooking in a dark can for months. There is NO livestock of any kind in this system yet but I did see an outbreak of pods. This tank has a SB REEF led unit over it and a 29g sump with filter sock and skimmer (which is running). I took the 2 leftover capsules and added them to this tank even though it wasn't the proper dosage the day after I dosed the dt. I will be watching it also.
