Hello reefers,
Can anyone give me a first hand experience of their bluethroat trigger when they first got them and how they are now ?
1) mine was very shy for the first week but started to eat pellets and frozen today for the first time but not attacking them huts whatever came infront of him
2) how are they with inverts and corals since I saw him sizing up my fireshrimp
3) How are they in general I mean jan. Community tank
4) My tank is tang dominated and he’s the only trigger with a pair of crosshatches coming in a few weeks ..
5) Articles are great and all but wanted some first hand feedback from my forum
Pictures will be greatly appreciated as well mine is too shy still and he’s about 3-4 inches
Thx

I've had a female BT for around 9 months, started in a reef, but it has been transfered to a FOWLR. Took down my 90 gallon reef in favor of a 180 gallon FOWLR, I wanted some butterflies and angels.

She never seamed interested in any of the corals, hasn't bothered any of the snails, hermits or starfish & she's around 4". She's in with plenty of smaller fish, chromis, anthias & longnose hawk. Doesn't bother any of them. Now can't say how she'll act once she grows larger, but doubt they'll be problems as she still seams sky is easily the less aggressive.

She eats about everything, pellets, flakes, frozen brine, frozen mysis, live blackworms & frozen clams. So, far a nice interesting fish.

1) My Bluethroats were vary shy when I first got them. I think it took almost 6 months for them to be fully comfortable with me. They will eat almost anything that floats in the water column. Mine eat flakes, pellets, frozen food and even algae sheets.
2) They are okay with inverts. Mine haven't touched my inverts that I introduced before or after them. I would introduce inverts when your lights are off. They may associate them with food when they are released into the tank cause they may think you are feeding them.
3) My 2 Bluethroats are pretty peaceful towards their tank mates which are 2 pyramid butterflyfish, fire clownfish, mandarin dragonette and a purple tang. Vary tame. They rarely fight one another, and they are 2 males too.
4) Should be fine in that tank. Bluethroats can be easily startled (mine are) by other fish and so just be aware they may try to jump out of the tanks if they don't have holes and caves to retreat too. I have these structures in the tank so that they don't think that the only escape is up out of the tank.

I'll post pictures later when I get the chance.

Also if you want the male bluethroats nice blue and yellow colouring to come out, you will need another bluethroat trigger, male or female. He will show off in front of them to show dominance or for mating purposes if female.

1. My guy was extremely shy. Would only eat large krill stuck to the glass for the first month or two. Also jumped out of the tank several times due to people walking by the glass to quickly after lights out (thankfully we were always home).
2. He was about 7,” tried to eat my fairly hefty coral handed shrimp. The shrimp pulled it’s arm away indignantly and the fish never tried for him again.
3. Never bothered other fish. Kept with clowns, tang, angel, mandarin, chromis, even tiny fish like masked gobies.

Goodluck with your new fish! Got any pics?

Bluethroats will usually never bother any other species, I've never seen mine go for any of my snails or crabs, I don't have any shrimp. They are in a fowlr but I know people with them in reefs with no issues. My pinktail trigger used to bully the male bluethroat, the bt never instigated anything. But now my pinktail is blind and I will see the bt pick on him from time to time, and I see them all scuffed up like they've been fighting.

If your bt is a male I might be concerned how he and the male crosshatch might get along, they are from the same genus. If your bt is under 4" and looking female, it could still be an immature male.

My pair don't cover alot of real estate, they tend to hang and hover around their 2 story condo, in and out of the rocks. Here's a pic when they were younger, their color is more steel blue now.

Yeah it’s a male .. was thinking about the crosshatch thing to

They are vary nice. Best decision I made was to purchase these two.
They have a lot of personality. They spit water at me when I pass the tank cause they want to get fed lol.
My Niger does the same. He will spit on me when I am working on the sump and is absolutely accurate with his trajectory.

Mine is a big baby...doesn't pick on anything or anyone. When I initially got him and added him to my tank he was twice the size of the clownfish, however the clownfish would keep picking on him for whatever reason.

Eats like a pig!

My male and female pair are model citizens and get along with all my tankmates . They don't touch any of my snails, shrimp, corals etc... They eat anything I put in the tank including nori. The only time they have messed with my corals is when I would spot feed and the triggers would try to eat the food and kind of nipped at the corals. They've never intentionally went after anything. Definitely one of my favorite fish
