Calling on all bluethroat trigger owners

Yeah I noticed you have two males .. all good with them ?

I'm curious as well. It usually only works temporarily. So how big is the tank, how big are the fish, and how long have they been together. Smaller males in larger tanks for a short period can get along. This almost never last long term.

Mine are perfect tank mates don't bother nothing eat like pigs and only hide when I put hand in the tank

I had a male and female pair for over 3 years In a reef tank with 5 different tangs and wrasses. They got along great, they never bother any corals or inverts. I only lost them when hurricane Irma took out the electric for days and couldn’t find a generator. Would highly recommend

Caught him stretching, great addition for any tank.

Do the males always lose color? If not, what tricks help them to keep the brilliant blue and yellow?

Tank is a 90 gallon. Fish are maybe 5 or so inches. They've been together for more than 2 years now. Dunno how it's been working out so far. I got one of them on the impression it was a female cause it had the female colouration. It changed to the male colouration once I added the male Bluethroat. I just kinda left it as is and it's been fine.

They loose colour when there aren't other Bluethroat triggers around. I read the colours are for dominance and mating. My Bluethroat always have vivid colours which I'm guessing is cause they are always trying to show dominance towards one another.

So your second male brought out the colors of the first... can you tell a female from a dulled out male?

I've never kept these, but I will in the future!

I went with pictures from the internet. The dulled male had the exact same colours and features as a female would. Like it's fins were brown like a females and there was no outline of the characteristic bluethroat.

If you want a male and female pair a lot of LFS or online places get "confirmed pairs". These are 2 bluethroats that were caught together and are assumed to be bonded. Don't know if they are actually a mated pair but that's how you can get a confirmed male and female.

That's what I was wondering, I'd you has to buy them together.

Thanks for the info!

Have had a male and female for 2 years, they weren’t shy, ever. Food has always been a priority for them. They are great tank mates, don’t bother anything, other fish or corals. In fact, the female protects everyone, when the tank owner sticks his hand in the tank to clean, etc. She attacks me, has drawn blood many times. The male chases the female, but that’s all he bothers, when I get close to the tank, he’s quick to, get close to his hole in the rocks, except for feeding time. The female spits water at me when it’s feeding time. We dive, and love to see triggers, so we are very happy to have them in our tank, and they are great. I got them together, from LFS, they were hiding together when the net went in, was so cute I had to get them both. They have done the mating swim, but otherwise sleep in different holes. Sorry for the iPad camera picture, it’s very blue.

Just shows me after 30+ years there's something to learn. A few months went by and my male lost his colors, I assumed a vitamin defiency, so I started adding vitamins to the food, with no results. Months pass and I just figured maybe it turned to a female. Well around 6 months ago I added a sargassum trigger, within a week I started noticing the yellow on the fins was coming back along with the bluethroat, within a month my small male bluejaw had all it's vibrant yellow accents and blue jaw back. When it happened it actually crossed my mind if introducing the sargassum caused the bluejaw to color back up, now I'm 100% sure it did.

Probably did .. he had no reason before to show his colors ..

Had mine about a week now. He was any on the first day but been out and about every day since. Not bothered by anything and not bothering anything. He'll only eat frozen at the moment though and doesn't touch flake or pellet which is something I'm working on.

I have two blues throats , when i got them I and my LFS thought one was female and one male, as it turns out the one we thought was female is now getting the yellow fins, I guess they were both male. No problem they get along well.
