Can I use urine to maintain bacteria??

I think I'd jut ghost feed the tank while fallow . Are your fish in QT? Anyway a couple weeks before adding fish I'd pick up the feeding so the bacteria numbers will be able to handle the fish waste

depending on if your a lefty or righty You could use urine. once in a while. ;)
 
Many reefers in Germany use urea as a nitrogen source instead of NO3. Of cause you can use urine if you want but it can be tricky to decide how much because you do not know the urea concentration in your urine. But - if you do - skip the NO3 adding.

But do you need to add NH3/NH4 just in order to maintain nitrification bacteria in a mature aquaria? IMO - you not need to do that - most nitrification bacteria will go dormant and could wake up again but it is wise that give very little food the first weeks when you add your fishes again.

If anyone would use urine instead for pure ammonia or urea - the toxicity of other compounds are not any problems. It is a very, very small amount urine you need - the contaminants will not be anything that concern me.

Thanks everyone for your answers, I’ve been in the hobby for 14 years and in a situation I’ve never experienced before, I’ve never fed corals...only fish poo, so would something like acropower be the best? I can dose NO3 and PO4 if levels drop to low. I appreciate all of the info on bacteria and glad I don’t have anything to worry about there. I currently carbon dose V& V do I stop completely? If so do I titrate down? Sorry for so many questions, feeling like a newbie at the moment, any shared experiences would be appreciated as the last thing I want to do now is have my SPS die as well... this is a pic of the fish less tank...

Aside from that, this is really interesting:
If you remove all your fish, fallow not a drop of food for five years, then put original +3 fish back, it still handles the bioload.
So what is the bacteria feeding with no nutrient input?

Lol don’t worry I’m not going to, yeah Brandon posted some great threads on bacteria, which have really educated me... just need to not starve my corals now and wait several weeks...

They never go dormant they're fed by contamination bac and other sources. Dormant would've registered in my three year fallow thread which passed as a recent new cycle would

This tank here isn't going years fallow :)

Yes, that’s how we did it when I was a kid. My first freshwater 10 gallon tank back in the early 80s was set up that way. Fill the tank, let it sit for a month, then add fish. We didn’t dose ammonia or have bacteria in a bottle. Beneficial bacteria live in the air and all over surfaces... add water and some time and let nature take its course.
 
Urine is sterile so not for bacteria. Initial cycle any way you want. One piece of dead shrimp. Couple of damsels. Bottle of Timms or Biospira. Put a seachem ammonia reader and wait for it to turn yellow. People say it takes three days. Or six weeks. Bacteria replicate only so fast.

Water and time in a home equals microbiome, short time. Water equals catch more food for bac that we can’t see, as long as there is water

Any running reef tank has organic reserves in it that you can’t get out, they’re bac food forever, on top of daily input, the reason we can’t see bac food is the same reason we can’t see bac with the unaided eye. The fallow tanks are the most easy to envision for those familiar with bacteria...it’s the unassisted 30 day cycles, no feed no human inoculation that really boggles the mind... but an 80s unassisted cycler smiles and recalls a simpler, less retail-coaxing my every approach to science time.

What goes dormant would be a monoculture of any given bac, on selective agar, under the right temps, in my positive pressure microbiology lab / but not a home.




A home always contributes bac to any hydrated sample, by the minute. Lasse kept tanks in the eighties but I guess he used soil or some seed source for starters...he never had to go straight epoxy gravel and plastic plants like we did. The mosh has started inevitably now. It took me nine pages of fishing pun intended in our test scenario thread above and only water dog wrote it so eloquently, everyone else went all phd on us.

When I made the distraction of asking in that thread “what if I added ten new canister filters to the system, would they too upcycle in a month if we didn’t increase feed?” and then the doctors chimed in all certain with a choral no, that’s like asking if Water dog was able to cycle more than one tank unassisted in his home...of course he could cycle one tank. Or ten, or however many tanks fit in his home...all by day 30 of only adding water. the system doesn’t behave differently if the tanks are unconnected or not, I just know the masses are held up on anthropomorphism/bac do what humans do/ and one can frame questions in such a way as to bring that fact brightly into the light. The masses will never agree, and the retail bottle bac machine $ wants it that way.

Go to your sink and input four ounces of tap water into a cup. You now have excellent bottle bac and nitrifers all set to go. Our tap water is shooting bac all over the place, when we shower, bac are aerosolized and cast around the entire home... I could plate nitrifiers off anyone's drywall, but withhold feed from an aquarium and nitrifers die?

Somebody right now, set up a test vat for fallow testing in your garage. Let it go unheated uncooled through all seasons and merely keep it vented (air) and topped off. Oxidize test it in 2025, confirm what we already posted and then some, it'll be an awesome article about how we used to envision tank bacteria long ago

I dont have a scientific rational, i would dose something that has less smell if need nutrients [emoji23]

Besides that you will be dosing an unknown quantity of nitrogen. Based upon the physiology and diet of the particular organism. I have never looked this up but I would assume the nitrogen content of urine varies from sample to sample.

How in the world did you get your fish out of there without tearing your corals to bits?

in contemplating the unseen I missed the large picture: you are right BestMomEver, how in the world does one get fish out of that tank... don't they all head right to the rockwork when they see the net?
