so if i get a chalice or zoas or any coral from the ocean and there is no name for it, and it started with me does that signify that i can give it a name and start the "lineage" with me? just want to know because i have some stuff that i have never seen around and everyone always wants to know the "lineage":ooh:

IMO there are wayyyy too many ppl giving average corals catchy names and trying to sell them for big dollars.... I tend to buy what I like whether it has a nice name or not. I would post some pictures of the stuff you wanna name and if you get alot of interest and no one know of a name for it then possibly give it a name.

Usually when something is named by someone who has a name... it is because this piece stands out from whatever thousands of coral they have seen. Yes, you can name a coral whatever you want... but this is where corals end up with 15 names. A super unique piece that may have only had one owner would be a better candidate for a name that whatever need tranship corals that may be at 100 LFS this week. Or, say there is a coral that everyone wants and only one person has... well, a demand may be created to get that species... if this is the case, the rarity or limit is going to be based on the owner of that coral.... For Example: If Bobby Green has a acan colony no one else has, and won't frag it... you are going to have a harder time getting a hold of that piece as opposed to say "Your Idaho" chalice, which was super rare and in high demand... but is being sold and grown out so the price may decrease and make the piece a little less "limited."

I'm not here to make money or really not even post anything for sale at all. just wanting to know the deal with lineage, and when people ask about what to say on were it came from.

i agree 1000% with you suttumlikapimp, i buy what looks good. here is the deal, when i ask what a name is it is always the same thing......"it looks like good but what is the lineage" or "it looks like this but you cant say that because it didn't come from.......". all coral comes from the ocean and just because jo schmo says it is the "tyree rainbow dingle berry doohicky" its worth $1,000,000!!

just wanted to know if i make a name and it comes from the "ocean", is that were the lineage would start, because all the coral does come from the ocean....before i get it, before the stores get it, before the wholesalers get, it is taken form the ocean floor. thanks all for the input.

That's the thing, is you have Joe Schmo saying "Oh this is the Tyree Fox Gadget Josh Rev Bubbleberry Watermelon Cherry Razzleberry Dr. Doom Vs. Thanos Chalice" when really it is not.... If someone is trying to pass a cheap fake off as something real, then yeah... We want to know where you got it from, who they got it from etc..

Look at it in through a "Collector's" eyes... No matter what, there are going to be fakes/replicas of everything... coins... guns... cars... etc... The same applies in the coral trade.

You can paint a Honda Corvette red 20 times, but it is not a Corvette.

I think that you have to be a well known collector, to start lineage. IMO

why.....if i found it and it is a bad to the bone piece of coral that i nor any other person has seen why cant i name it and the lineage start with me?

ok but if it is taken from the ocean, starts with me, and it has a name, looks the same, ready to go, why cant it be sold or even called the same name for that matter?

Well the linage would start with you... but if you have no name in the game you become what most collector's dislike.

There is nothing wrong with naming your animals, people have been doing it for years.... You may own a collie named Lassie, but that's just it... you own a collie NAMED Lassie, you don't actually own the real deal Lassie that is famous for a reason.

Make sense?

You can sell whatever you like, but like I said before you would just be another Joe Schmo trying to put a name to something.

Even if you had something that looked exactly the same, you don't have the history of the coral to back it up. With linage, comes a story.... if you are just naming stuff, or claiming to have named items, whats your story?

"Hey where did this coral get it's name?"

"I dunno, I just thought it looked like a random name."

Ask anyone who has a real named piece that has history, they can tell you a 9 page story on just their frag alone. Some people get off on that...

... I thought I had a tyree chalice piece a while back and I had so much fun tracking down linage/information and showing piece of what I had, to collectors in hopes of finding linage. The stories were so awesome to read... the struggles, the trades, the money, the desire... Amazing.

ok so just say the "miami hurricane chalise" was found one day while i am surfing....holy cow i look down and see this bright colorful thing on the ocean floor, grab it and take it home. do some reaserch and find wow this is a rare piece that i have found. i cant say that i have the "miami hurricane chalise" because it didnt come from jo schmo who names it?

It would probably be called a look a like... there are about 20 EME's out right now... only one is the true one.

If you were out surfing and collecting coral I wouldn't worry about the word "linage" as much as the word "prison."

To answer your question, No.. you can't name something with "Tyree" if Steve has never put his hands on it.

As for me, i think that every unique and worthy piece can get a name and if you are the one who introduce it the chain starts with you.. In the past, I named a palys through zoaID( even got a personal visit from the official for that matter)...I personally only cared about the survival of the morph, but i do not mind any High end vendor charge half a paper for a single head after 2 years of aquaculture...the only sad part that with a rarity comes a high price and if few people have em there is a chance that morph will die out and we all out...Does any one have sapranos btw?...

common bro you know what i mean.....all the coral we get comes from the ocean!!!!! im just sayin if i got a piece of what ever kind you want that has a name it is a look alike.....how can that be. people done make coral....we make babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a piece of coral cannot be linked to just one person.

Look at it this way:

Everyone's children are special and important to them..... in reality it's all just a bunch of kids.... every once in a while a child will be known by everybody for one reason or another. Does not make your kids and less special, but this child is probably worth more to everyone else.

Please don't take that the wrong way!

People don't make coral no, we grow it and color it up.. and we make frags, in a way we make coral for others... the ocean is not as kind.

So yeah actually, we do make coral... and yes, one piece of coral CAN be linked to one person.

For the record, corals in the ocean look nothing like what they do under out lighting.

So tell us your "story" on the palys you named!!

I submitted them to Zoaid, let them choose a name for them... then a bunch of people cry and had the name changed. I capitalized off the other name and make 1,200.00... Thanks guys!

when i say a piece cant be linked to one person i mean in the sence that they made it not they founded it. i know and understand coral does not look anything like it does in the ocean as it does in our tanks.

so by saying you color up the coral, thats not saying that i dont have the same piece of coral, but it just has not colored up yet.....right?
