Chasing my tail...

huh. I wonder if it was the same vendor. Care to share which one? I can find out where this one came from. It might be a clue! I say Watson a clue!
I have no idea what theyre called. It's 2 Russian guys who drive down from NY and sell fish out of the back of their van lol

How long have you had him? He didn't any odd behaviors before you put him in?

probably had him since August. I got him at a sale

Probably not the same place then. :) Oh well! I like a good mystery

It's very fishy. I wish we would stop buying from them anyway, their fish usually arent great quality.
I am sure what they do us probably animal cruelty. If it was up to me I would stop walmart from selling betta fish.

If he had been recently treated before with low dose cu then treated again by you it is possible that there is toxic build up causing fits of some sort. Cu will be stored in organs for a while.

That's weird behavior, almost as if he got his wires crossed and directions inverted. He doesn't seem to be focused on a reflection or other perceived threat.

Odd right?! Not too sure about him. If it's abnormal, I'm worried about my other fish. They are 6 days from going back to the DT. I've run antibiotics and all kinds of meds through there to cover all the bases throughout this 76 days. He's going back to the store either way... unless humble want's to study him or something. I'm about to start working there part time so I can keep an eye on how he does.

At the LFS he was in a tank without copper- i know cause it's one of the tanks for corals and inverts.

I hope the the copper didn't hurt his system any. I wonder if it causes nervous system damage?

^^ There are some theories about this, but nothing has ever been substantiated. However, even proponents of this theory say the fish has to be in copper for months before any damage is done. I've never personally experienced this in any fish I've ever treated, but being copper is a poison I suppose anything is possible.

I think I need to cut this fish up, dissect his brain, etc. (kidding)

Meredith, can you list all the drugs/chemicals you used on this fish and for how long? I'll check Google Scholar for any known side effects.

Kanaplex, prazipro and cuppramine. copper for 30 days. I think the kanaplex was for 2 weeks? I did that once before the copper. The prazipro was two doses a few days apart, once before the copper and kanaplex and once again after the copper when my tang experienced some fluke-like symptoms. That's it though.... do you think I should let him keep living like this? Is it cruel?

Found two studies on the subject.....

Structural and functional effects of heavy metals on the nervous system, including sense organs, of fish: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/074284139190163N
The main objective of the present study was to investigate possible links between biomarkers and swimming performance in the estuarine fish Pomatoschistus microps acutely exposed to metals (copper and mercury)... Since a reduced swimming capability of fish may reduce their ability to capture preys, avoid predators, and interfere with social and reproductive behaviour, the exposure of P. microps to copper and/or mercury concentrations similar to those tested here may decrease the fitness of wild populations of this species.

I just glanced over the relevant parts of both studies, but there is evidence to support that exposure to copper can lead to nervous system damage and diminished swimming performance for some fish. Obviously, these would be in the minority. And we can't 100% say for sure that's what happened here. Just that it's a possibility.

Does he do it all of the time? I would put him in another tank (preferably a DT with a more natural environment) to see if his behavior changes before considering euthanizing. It's possible this odd behavior is being caused by an environmental factor i.e. being in a QT.

Pretty much. He stops sometimes.... I'd say about 80% of the time he's circling. I'm planning on taking him back to the LFS since he's nipping corals and I already have him out of the DT. I can put him in the tank with all the corals and such and see how he does. Maybe he will be better in there.... with other fish and sand and normal stuff.

So the angel looks ok today. Hes still turning slow cirlces but they are wider, slower and less frequent. I didnt see him eat still, but hopefully hes getting some food. Ill try to get a video.
