Cool, watch for phosphates leaching from the BRS rock if they haven't been cured.

What are your plans?

It potentially could be an ongoing issue. I've heard some stories of the rocks leaching phosphates that could lead to irritating algae issues.

In my opinion you would need a rather sizable refugium to get the results wanted. I think pellets and/or a algae scrubber are the best for nitrate and phosphate reduction.

I've read a bit about algae scrubbers, but I'm not entirely sure on how to make one still got any links for a good DIY?

Just do a Google search, plenty of links. And they can be very effective and inexpensive to build.

On a side note what do ya'll think of my stocking list:
shrimp goby of some sort
pistol shrimp
kole tang
2x bangaii cardinal
six line wrasse

Six lines can be mean and very jumpy, would need to add a screen top. And according to LA your tank is undersized for a Kole tang, what are the dimensions? Everything else should be good.

That HOB skimmer will be the bane of your existence. I would consider moving it to an under the tank sump.

I thought it was undersized as well, so I asked chris and jay and they said it'd be fine, and my tank is a 55 long so the swimming lanes are there, I think. also for that reason I'm going with glass tops.

You'll be fine with a kole in that tank. Looks good so far!

I would reconsider glass tops. What kind of reef are you going for? Mixed? SPS dominant? LPS dominant? Glass tops are a negative in my opinion, they block light and slow gas exchange which are two things you don't want. BRS makes screen kits that are rather inexpensive.

I'm going for SPS dominant, and I wouldn't do glass tops if it weren't for the fact that I've got 5 par38s from rapidled i'm gonna hang.

I would also suggest screen tops over glass tops. The glass tops will also hold a lot of heat in... Just ask Palvrye....
