I don't think the salt has anything to do with your (or their) problem, so don't go spend the $ on it if you don't want to. You can test your source water with the same kits if you want, or see if you can come by a tds meter.

I've never used distilled water, but I'm sure others have. It might be worth looking into as an option.

I found a few hydrogen sulphide tests on amazon. They do not say if they work in saltwater, but the don't day they don't. I have asked the question to the supplier's and one said it should. Just a thought.

Chiller. Some have been found to leach metals over time. Could be aluminum or this:

How old is the chiller and Do you have any metal fittings on your system?

Long shot , but who knows? I would have a triton test done to get to the bottom of it.

It's about 6 months old and I have all plastic fittings.

I just added a titanium grounding probe. If I had some,that should take care of it. I also ran a separate ground from my chiller to a copper water pipe.

The total lack of microfauna leads me toward some kind of toxicity. And if you are not getting a weird color out of the poly filter, I know the triton test is expensive at almost $50 but in about 2 weeks we would have something solid to go on to get you back on track.
