Couple almost dies after cleaning Reef Tank

Well, it wasn't a "lie", Police, Rescue and ambulance in full attendance. 10 people taken to hospital. Something happened lol

The story is a lie.. to make it seem like the fish tank is responsible... this was caused by boiling a lot of toxic palys indoors with no ventilation. Not by scrubbing some small amount of Xenia off a rock.

from my experience I didn't feel any effects until many hours later so its hard to believe the firefighters had issues once they entered, seems to me like someone is trying to take shots at the salt water hobby and industry just my opinion tho

Good article. I’ve always loved Zoas but I have to admit I was afraid of them for fear of palytoxin but it would seem that not all Zoas are out to get us after all. Might need to look at getting some frags.

I keep nontoxic P. mutuki and a large amount of zoanthus sansibaricus but goggles are still a must when working with them

i've read several articles of the same couple, and every story is a lil different. The picture of them infront of their reef, shows, Palythoa on lower right of tank. I don't think the couple is telling us the whole story, for whatever reason.

The fact that palytoxin is present in other soft corals is news to me.

Obviously the article is wrong in that the toxin was from the xenia, but don't discount the dangers of improper handling of palys. I have a friend that was in our club that put a rock with palys in the sink under hot water and it sent him, his wife and their infant daughter to the ER. He was hospitalized for 2 days. It wasn't from boiling, but very hot water from the sink was enough to spread it.

Trying to remove unwanted corals, but not knowing better. I don't see how doing something like that out of ignorance or misunderstanding equals a karma situation where someone gets negative payback for doing something bad to someone. It's not like an aquarium comes with an instruction manual.

here let me help you.. coral is an animal. a living thing.. just because it's not human does not make it less valuable of a life. and every reaction deserves an equal and opposite reaction.

It is sad that nobody covering this did anything to investigate what happened? Garbage in, garbage out, and why I watch very little news. More opinion than fact.
