The API test kit is notorious for giving false readings for low ammonia. If you clean the tubes really well you may notice that your ammonia reading is actually 0. Also, I run an algae scrubber to keep Nitrates at zero. An ATS also removes phosphates. No chemicals, no media to buy, no expensive equipment. Floyd R turbo has a great thread on how to here:

This WILL eliminate Cyano, AND it will eliminate nitrates and phosphates even without water changes!
Building an ATS is what made reef keeping possible for me,because I have a family and travel. PM with any questions, one of the main reasons that nobody pushes this technology is because it's hard to make money off of it.
