Over the years so I've fed my anemones mysis shrimp, scallops, mixed frozen foods, etc. I just got the urge to try fish. Here's the catch, each of the steaks is probably a 3-month supply. For those who have done this, how do you go from here to feeding portions without wasting the rest of the steak?

I cut off small pieces feed it to him and put the rest in the freezer bag. So it doesn’t go to waste. And break off another piece when you need one.

Me too I have three bubble tips. I mixed up their diet with fish, Shrimp, Reef Roids, and small Frozen Plankton.
2 have turned into 10 for me over the years. Ranging from 5" to 13" now. I've never directly fed them anything.

When you do this, is it still frozen? If so what do you cut it with? I'm a little afraid of losing a fingertip this way, lol.

Thaw, get about 6 gallon sized freezer bags. Cube into desired serving size. Put cubes in bag but pinch in between cubes before placing fat in freezer. Freeze and crack off like your mysis cubes.

I feed mine every now and again. I use a DIY frozen food mix, which includes among other things, squid, fish, scallops, mussels, shrimp, etc. I thaw it and hand feed it. Mine’s a BTA.

You won’t lose a fingertip with BTAs. Now carpet anemones? They’re another story. :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

This is a good idea. Not sure why I was thinking I could only feed one at a time from a homemade option. Maybe I'll get some of those others and make up a mix with the first steak.

At least for BTA's there's no reason to ever feed them (well maybe new sickly one) assuming you have strong light, nutrients and at least feed your fish where they occasionally get some scraps. They are bad enough like that but if you start feeding them, they will reproduce even more like rabbits.

Is this generally considered a bad thing? This is not something I would try to avoid, personally.

Well, if you're totally into anemones/BTA's that's one thing otherwise you end up with them taking over your tank and killing a lot of stuff in the way, particularly SPS. What you see below is w/o even ever feeding them. If you think you're going to make bank off selling them, think again. Very few people want them unless maybe you're giving them away. I used to get store credit of $30 each for them but that place is long gone. I literally went through 100's of them and now kept a few in a 32g tank with clowns and almost finished cleaning them out of this tank for good.

I see your point! Yes, this is essentially what I am going for in my tank, although I will have more types than just BTA. And I do not feed my fish enough, apparently, because my anemones don't grow like this. :)

I wish I had that problem. You just need about 30 clownfish, it'd be perfection.

OK, I got some scallops to go with my steak, and I'm thawing a test portion of each overnight. @BigWillStyle @Fishy888 any suggestions on portion sizing? When I do scallops I just use a food processor, but the sizes I get are (obviously) very random unless I want it to be a puree.

You want to feed it portions it can get in its mouth. Don’t go overboard with it because the nem might regurgitate the food if it’s too much or it can rot in the anemone’s stomach. Feed it very small portions and give it several days to digest its meal. As it grows you can feed it a bit more but never more than it can fit in its mouth.
