How often do you stir the sand? I'd never do that! If you have anoxic bacteria living in there you will release methane gas into your water column, very likely that is what happened. At least not impossible at all.
make sure to get another birdsnest frag. i am sorry for your loss, but they are the first coral to tell you something isnt right.
they will tell you beyond any test kit.

it is less than 3 inches not even an inch but does get very cloudy when i have done it before
im bias for red sea.got a brand of tests you like? its hard to make the colors out on mine at timesis it blue is it purple who really knows?? thanx a ton for the info you guys

i test alk cal mag nitrate nitrite phosporus ammonia ph thats like everything lol i use fuel and photoplankton zooplankton feed mysis and table shrimp and baby brine we grow in a diy hatchery
the tritation syringe level does not have to be consistent if you have reagant left over upon completion of the test.i got the red sea alk, mag, cal test but my syringes never seem to fill up the same twice
