Enough with the live sales already

Lol. I was just thinking, my ex-father-in-law was the controller for a national department store (anchor store in malls they used to inhabit). We talked about the pricing policies As a good CPA he only bought from the store during sales using his employee discount. :)

The idea is that everything is marked up 30% from their desired sales price to take advantage of early seasonal buyers who weren't price sensitive, then they would run their seasonal sales at 30% off to create excitement and move the merchandise. At the end of the season, slash the remaining to clear the shelves for the new stuff. They would break even until Christmas when they would make all their profits for the year. A side note, the hair salons on the top floors were their biggest profit center.

Interestingly enough, the internet broke the model by educating customers with comparison shopping and remote buying. Now we have come full circle as the live auctions are using decades old marketing gimmicks these old brick and mortar stores invented.

How long was it before eBay added the "buy it now" in response to buyer and sellers who didn't want to buy/sell in an auction?

Even I don’t really buy from him I enjoy Than’s live sales at tidal Gardens you tube. Usually a good watch and I wind up learning. Than is a trip anyway very entertaining

So some of you may not like this but here is my 2cents , I have been an administrator for a cigar board forum for 10 years and I laugh at some of the comments posted about censorship at this forum..basically this is rev’s home and he makes the rules..there is no constitution here, he pays the bills and he can do what he wants..it’s his house, now if you don’t like the ways you as a citizen can just leave or abide by the rules..I have seen many things on the cigar board that are a lot worst than here which I’m amazed at some of the comments. I believe there is a mod room with discussion as that’s what we do at the cigar board. Plain and simple if you don’t like it don’t come into his house,if you think you have rights to not have a post deleted or moved, guess again

Now as far as the live sales I believe the reason we are seeing so much is folks were locked in their homes and it was a way the vendors to capitalize, do I think they are actual sales, heck no, I used to like them but as many have stated I can buy the same corals at cheaper prices going thru a hobbies which I do more than ever...

All I'm saying is if you took both models, (single day fast paced live sales and fully stocked websites where patrons can shop at their convenience) set them side by side and told the customer to choose, the majority would select the latter. And rightfully so the vendors will benefit more from the former.

The chief concern that most are complaining about is the everyday availability from these vendors which as I understand is dismal at best. And the vendor knows that they can't offer both models. If they did, live sales will have very little participation due to the fact that we don't have to spend all day clicking refresh and eventually lose out to a BOT because we can simply go a select a coral from their website at our convenience.

The customer is losing out in favor to vendor advantage. I'm of the opinion that if there was a level playing field, live sales would cease to exist. But we all know that's not going to happen until light is shed and customers understand that there is an alternative.

I agree that it boils down to voting with your wallet, but you can't have an uninformed patron vote with their wallet if they don't know that there's a better way to do things.

I disagree that the vendor can't offer both. List available stock on the site. Then offer live sale "codes" in the forum threads that can be used for "x" amount of frags, first come first serve basis.

I work in distribution sales and we have trade shows every year, with heavily discounted prices offered at these shows (usually three day events). Not all my customers attend the show. I don't tell customers that didn't attend the show that "we can't sell that to you, we're saving it for people attending the show". They just get regular pricing instead of the discounted price.

Do they have similar stuff going on in cigar sales worlds? Live auction for small production hand rolled cigars?

Ps
(also what would be best site for me to order some Macanudo’s? ;Happy )

That would be interesting way to try it. However it would require real discounts. As discussed on here not all corals on live sales are actually cheaper than normal. The fear of missing out effect comes into play in the pricing for live sales. With a code not sure you would get the same physiological response.

yep he can do whatever he wants and the mods, however you push ppl away and guess what? There goes your income source as well. It’s a 2 way street.

Made the mistake one time. Purchased several things I really didn’t even like because I thought they were a deal. Turns out I could have spent half what I paid at the LFS had I waited.
Happens all the time to me. I also find different LFS to price differently too. So what could be a great deal online and for one LFS is way more than another LFS charges.

That's why they try and strike a balance. However it is majority rules. They just have to make the majority happy as with most businesses. For example when netflix raised there prices and separated DVD rental and streaming. They new it would make people upset but also knew the majority would be ok with it. And now they are huge.

You're absolutely right that it would require real discounts on items. It would also mean that the retailer would have to establish a standard price for most items. Now that standard price will fluctuate a little with supply availability and wholesale pricing fluctuations but nothing crazy should happen, except maybe a ban on importing coral.

Coral sales right now are how used car sales were before Carfax and all the tools to correctly price a car. It's "get as much as you can on every sale" attitude.

Live sales are bad, but some shows are even worse. Vendors don't display prices and you have to ask for price on every item. I stay away from any vendor that doesn't have clearly marked pricing or signage for sales like "buy 3 get 1 free". Nothing more irritating than being in line at a show and the guy just offered a deal to the person in front of you but not you.

could be, but how many folks do you think will actually leave, and how many do you think will effect the income. In my experience i get a few folks at the cigar board that state they will leave, i can count on one hand actually how many leave and 9 out of 10 times they come back. For 1 that leaves i'm guessing for this forum 2 join.

good advice about checking for prices at a show.

oh it’s happened.

The undisputed king of reef forums was Reefcentral. Look what happened to them. They chased all their members off and well, the rest is history...

He's absolutely right, the heavy handed moderators at RC pushed people right into the arms of r2r. It's clear that this site learned from that mistake. But there are a lot of great things that RC had that this site doesn't, but that's for another thread.

Alright, now that I have some more time:
(warning - post will be long!)

The problem is that this is a touchy subject for r2r staff because when they host a sale like this, $500 is paid to this site.
I don't think it's really all that touchy. You're right though - sponsors do pay extra to have a live sale, and they all have a chance to sign up for them before the year starts.
Also on that note, the moderators here (like myself) are NOT paid. (Admins and those with their names on things are different)
"Almost like" wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
But you do put thoughts in people's heads, by simply suggesting such things. (when in fact, what you were suggesting was completely incorrect!)
I will say, it didn't require several of us posting about it all at once, nor did it really belong in this thread, but enough about that.
As for threads never being "deleted", it's technically correct. They just get moved out of general sight, or changed to "vendor feedback" and you're told to stop making negative posts that are creating issue for those paying the bills.
There's a pretty constant perception by some users that all mods are on a mission to "protect our sponsors", and that's not true. I'm not paid here - I don't much care to "protect" some business. We just enforce the rules. (Now, you could argue the rules are such to protect sponsors, but that's a different discussion - and I don't believe that to be unequivocally true either)
The rules about feedback threads have been the way they are forever, and it's just the best balance we've been able to find. Put them all in one place, and don't let people "dog pile" onto someone's negativity - but there's nothing that stops them from creating their own feedback thread. Disgruntled people tend to ruin things - and they're always negative about it. The positive "cheerleaders" are minuscule in numbers compared to them.

Turnover is definitely and issue with the hobby. Not just for live stock but everything.
The average hobbyist only lasts 18 months in this hobby. (hang onto this data point)
But we all know that's not going to happen until light is shed and customers understand that there is an alternative.

Agree twice here, but back to that 18 months point - most aren't around long enough to figure that out. And I also agree with you that it's a cash cow for vendors - it's a tried/true sales model that works. It's all about hype and marketing, as is the whole "name game" of coral XYZ in this industry. People really buy into it. I'll also bet that if were able to construct a poll and only survey those in the hobby longer than 10 years, we'd find only a small minority participate in live sales.
I wish we could just go to vendors websites and purchase corals without supporting the live sale aspect of it but now a days that just isn't possible because of the extremely limited quantity.
Not all vendors are playing it that way. Some certainly are, but there's so many vendors on the market these days, it's not hard to find selection out there.
I believe there is a mod room with discussion as that’s what we do at the cigar board.
There is, and that's really no secret. We've posted about it here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/what-happens-when-something-is-reported.662252/
The undisputed king of reef forums was Reefcentral. Look what happened to them. They chased all their members off and well, the rest is history...
And quite honestly, that's long been a model for us of what not to do.

As for my personal thoughts on live sales, I've been in this hobby over a decade, and I've participated in less than a handful of live sales. Mostly, I don't feel it's worth my time commitment to sit there for hours and hope I can be fast enough. And you have to know the market fairly well, in order to understand if the price is fair. I'd much rather window shop at a few vendors I've always been fond of. I'd even rather participate in eBay auctions, which I have done, but I approach that even a bit different. I set my max bids at what I'd actually be comfortable paying, and pretty much step away from it until the auction closes. If I win, I win, and if not, oh well.

The biggest way I tend to shop is at the trade shows. And after you've been to a few of those, you learn how good the deals can really be. Most online sales are never even close. Especially if you're walking around a trade show with cash, on the last day. Even some of the vendors you see selling on here, having live sales, tend to sell the same stuff much cheaper at the trade shows. And I feel that goes back to the point I tried to make earlier - the live sales target those in the 18 month turnover cycle, and the trade shows tend to draw in those who've been around long enough that they're not going to pay the same price.

The "name game" is a whole other thing in this hobby that can drive someone insane. It's pretty common that several of the same coral gets imported together, and while one vendor may pick it up and slap a fancy name on it with an impressive price tag, you might be able to go down to your LFS and find the same thing, for a fraction of the price. Of course, there are some corals that come into the trade which are truly unique and exclusive to one or two vendors, but that's often not the case. And even in those cases, vendors trade with another, hobbyists grow those corals, and in a few years, that unique, expensive thing has a lot more supply with a fraction of the price tag.

There's a few vendors I rarely buy from at all, simply because their prices seem out of bed to me. Just last year at MACNA, I saved part of spending money and traveled to a local store in the area. I honestly expected their in store prices to be less than their online prices, and I was pretty shocked when I found that to be incorrect. Kudos to them for being able to market as well as they do. I enjoyed browsing, but I left without a thing purchased. And I went back to the show, and spent my cash at a vendor I always do business with at the trade shows - someone who actually has discounted prices at a show (and also someone who does live sales on here).

Wasn't trying to stir up so much finger pointing was trying to steer towards good conversation. Much like the comment above by Evolved. Intelligent discussion.

I apologize if this thread ruined anyone's day.
