Everything is gotten expensive

There are multiple reports or companies (mainly huge corporations) that are raising their prices JUST because they know everyone will blame inflation. The meat packing industry was the worst. Inflation went through the roof, but somehow, so did the corporations profits.

not saying that is the whole story. There is a perfect storm of massive consumer demand, a rebuilding and reorganizing of supply chains, and to top it all off, we printed more money in one year than we already had in circulation. Permanent and temporary inflation was bound to happen.

Small increases in price, like what we saw with Neptunes stuff, makes sense, but you have to wonder: if some of the inflation goes down, will the prices they raised go back down? If they don’t, then we will really have something to be annoyed with.
Companies will take advantage of market conditions. Doesn’t mean consumers should allow them.

Prices will go down if the cause of that price move was a temporary issue i.e. backed up supply lines or insufficient production. Increases due to general inflation don't reverse generally speaking (unless there is a recession or depression, which you don't want obviously
Yeah, I should have said “part transitory and part regular inflation”. If the transitory is actually that, then prices should go back to normal if the supply chain gets fixed. I’m going to guess they probably won’t lower the prices though.

Perfect example of prices not going down we’re riding oil prices 20 years ago. Boat prices went up because of it yet never dropped because of it. Buyers got used to a price. Builders took advantage of that. Only to blame are consumers. They kept paying. Can’t blame the builder for making money.

Not to derail the thread but thank you for the tip. I just passed this to her and it is on her list.

Np! Hope she finds something soon. I know it took me a bit to land my first job in nursing. Once she gets 6 months to a year under her feet then she can start looking for a nursing job in the area she likes more. Once you get that magical first job experience, it gets easier to find your niche.

If this turns political we’ll have to close this thread. I’ve already edited one post. Please no political references. Sorry we can’t watch these threads all day long so this is the only warning. Hope everyone understands.
why censor?

I was thinking about that today when I was trying to find a simple cleaner shrimp but this hobby is a luxury. Always has been.

Anyway, when you stop production for 6 months and sputter for another 6 months, there just isn’t any excess capacity to catch up. Add to it shipping woes and here we are. This is where ‘just in time’ bites you in the rear end.

It’ll take a while to reclaim those lost production months and maybe by then additional plants will be online and then you’re faced with too much supply and not enough demand.

Ebb and flow .....

Soooooo, I went with acropower. I think acropower gone up a bit but Red Sea went up more, so they can have it. I am back with acropower the second gallon and see.

I know you gotta pay to play and I wasn’t living in the cave that knew stuffs gotten expensive but boy that Red Sea energy is $145 plus tax for the 5L jug.

I am about to run out and thinking switching back to just acropower for my sps dominated and mixed reef tanks.
I don't have these problems because I don't even know what Red Sea energy or acropower is or what I would use them for. ;Bucktooth

There's going to be no demand because people will just stop buying. I can't count how many times in store I've already overheard people say, "ugh I would love this but I can't pay $X for it because I already spent $X more than I usually do this week on the same stuff!"

One those interest rates go up, it's over

This hobby is expensive as you let it be. There are so many gimics out there. People read about there product and find it a miracle. But later find there tank is in no better condition than it was without it. 90% of the products i sold in 2010 are out of business. And all the new ones you see now will be gone in 10 years. I never owned a reactor, wavemaker etc. Fancy i ever got was a skimmer and UV for my fish systems. I never used a QT system and never lost anything. The same with my customers unless they didn't listen to my advice. And the last i was in business mark up in your LFS is 400%. I could buy a Niger Trigger for .50 cents in Indonesia and then when it lands in LA it is 12.00 and when it was in your LFS it is 49.99. One example of keeping it simple is one eldery customer i had she had a 150 tank. It was the most impressive tank i ever saw at that time. There was not one place for another coral and all that ran it was a good power compact a couple powerheads, heater and a cannister filter. The moral of the story is keep saltwater simple as possible. Its not how you can spend it is how efficient you spend. We should have a poll. What water do you use in your tank: Tap, RO, DI

Ran saltwater tanks on UF and canister. No WC. Nitrates 20 ppm or less. No clue on phosphates. Had no algae. Guessing it wasn’t much. Tanks always overloaded with fish. Fed twice a day. Fish only but place I had a wholesale business at used tap. Wholesalers I went to used tap. This was 80/90s. Curious how many large operations today actually use RODI. It would obviously need to be a commercial unit making thousand gallons plus per day. Lots of water cones out of their system shipping fish and corals.

Reef Builders uses sediment and carbon block filters. No RO membrane. No DI. My tap cones through a limestone aquifer then filtered and checked hourly. I guess I could go all out but I struggle with understanding exactly what that purified water stripped that would cause me concerns longterm since all I need it top off. Didn’t do WC in the past. Don’t do them now, either. Am looking into products like Metasorb to remove heavy metals in my tap as well as toxins produced by my future corals. Still researching and ultimately might need to do the occasional massive WC post ICP tests, if needed.

Currently running a diy UF plate to test denitrification along with melting coral skeletons to help supplement DK consumption. No sump. No socks. No skimmer. No issues so far. Been up since September 2021. If all goes as expected then the concept will migrate to my DT. Keeping it simple.

Just want to point out transitory inflation is not a real thing, at least in the terms people are trying to use it, and the federal reserve was forced to admit as much after months of not being able to give a clear definition of transitory inflation. Prices won’t come back down because the dollar is being devalued.

Stuff isn’t getting more expensive outside of the shipping cost issues. your currency is just worth less than it was a year ago. If you had a hundred dollars this time last year you would have aproximatley the same value as $93 dollars today. meanwhile the thing you want to buy still holds its value relative to the currency devaluation so the price “goes up”. This is why investing your money in ways that beats inflation from as early as possible is the only way you will get ahead in life.
