Fallow should be 8 days (joking)

What on earth could that accomplish? I wonder where he got that idea? And pigs fly right? lol

Well, thought about just walking out of the store after hearing that but couldn't resist their sweet deal and ended up grabbing a nice Kole tang for my new 100 gal tank lol
$20 bucks after tax was a steal

Gosh, hope some people don't take what we are writing here seriously.
Guys, fallow is 76 days, do not use water conditioners when using copper and treatment should last at least 2 weeks.

Maybe he meant minimum 8 days. By then there is a good chance ich is gone. By 30 days it is like 99% or more that it is gone.....

Hope you don't mind, but I edited the title of this thread. Just don't want someone casually browsing to get the wrong idea.

Question for you while you're here....the one study of the tomonts that lasted 72 days before "hatching", what was the water temperature?

Pretty sure it was 20C (68F). It's been a few years since I've read the study. I'm trying to obtain another copy so I can reread it.

Thanks....I'm just trying to figure out where this minimum of 76 days comes from....appreciate the help

I forget where but some time back I read breakdown of the days and percentages. I'd like to see that again if any of you have access to the information. Our 76 days is up Feb 1st.

Basically from all the literature I've read, in reef tank like temps, tomonts will generally hatch within 4-8 days....however there have been cases of tomonts not hatching for 28 days. There was one case under low temperatures, that tomonts hatched after 72 days...

Based on these numbers, if you go fallow for 10 days, it is extremely likely your tank will not have ich. 30 days and you are nearly guaranteed. 76 days seems to be an extra precaution as our tanks have higher temps...then again new strains of ich continue to be found so we never really know....IMO:)

Checkout Table 1 here: http://atj.net.au/marineaquaria/marineich.html

The thing that's confusing is if at "reef temps" it only takes <28 days for ich to complete it's life cycle, then why are so many people experiencing fallow failures when going fishless for 72 days? o_O

I have no idea the number of Crypto strains that exist, but the phylum Ciliophora currently contains 7200 known species. So it's my pet theory that there are strains of ich which actually take longer than 72 days for all the theronts to be released from their tomonts, regardless of temperature.

Ya but then your dealing with the unknown. If that's what your dealing with, no amount of fallow may help.....dealing with it from info we do know, at reef temps, in 30 days ich should be gone.

Also people may be unsuccessful for many reaaons....maybe not getting rid of it in QT? Maybe introducing a coral or rock without properly QTing it first.....or maybe as you said we just don't know...lol

Well this 8 day thing is true if you're putting a tang in, say a 40 gallon tank. It's a concentration thing....big fish in a small tank. It accelerates things when you do this. I'd show you the math, but it's New math, using Greek symbols and squiggly things, and is very complex! :D :D And you'll see, the tang will be happy!
