favia buy - would you be happy?

a couple of weeks ago i purchased frags of the "bpc flamethrower favia" based on this picture posted by a member here:

my deal was to buy three 2-head frags for $200 shipped.

last wednesday i received the shipment. these are the actual frags that showed up:

i was immediately disappointed, and inquired if the seller had by chance sent the wrong favia frags by accident.

the answer was no, it is the right coral.

i expressed my disappointment that the colors are not anything like the picture of the coral i thought i was buying. it should have red/orange surrounds with a yellow center - the pieces i got are brown with a green center. i would not have paid $50 for an entire colony of the favia i received!

the seller still says it is the correct coral, and that the colors must have shifted because they are frags.

i have bought at least 15 other favia frags in the past few weeks, and none of the others shifted colors - they all look like the pictures of the mother colonies. except this one.

what do you think? could it be possible that the color of the coral shifted that drastically?

That sucks. FWIW, the colony shot seems to be pretty well saturated. If it hurts your eyes to look at it, it probably isn't true to life.

Looks like yours may have been swapped with an alien eye favia if it is not the correct coral. I can't say for sure, though. Give the seller the benefit of the doubt for now. I hope it works out for you, though. Give it some time and the pieces may color up.

That 1st pic would easily get $200 for just one 2 eye frag, without including shipping. I think you got shafted.

I would say it's heavily photoshopped too. There is no backgroudn in that photo. so the seller can do whatever he wants with his picture without getting caught until someone bought and received the actual frags. I bought over 20 kinds fo favias and none of their frags shifted their colors in that dramatically.

Here is the frags photo being photoshopped. Do they look like their mother colony now? took me a minute to get it done. I could do better.

exactly.

if it were brown with yellow eyes, i would be ok with that. never in my 11 years of reefkeeping have i seen a favia's eye color shift like that.

When that coral came in it did have yellow/gold eyes. Wanted to buy the whole colony. I have a frag of it too, and mine has greenish eyes now.

From over a month ago.

To me it looked like a gold eye Big Mouth War Coral.

HoLy SmOkes I can see why your upset. Looks like a browned out War coral, the red might eventually show up, but those green eyes are likely not going to change to yellow

That pic looks weird with the dark background, almost as if they took a pic in a dark tank with a crazy spotlight, so it looks different from when I saw the coral. It definitely looked unique under white light, I would've paid big bucks for the colony and several collectors were ready to fight over it, but only frags were offered. Who knows, maybe the yellow eyes will come back. I can understand you wondering if this is just another war coral because your frags don't look that amazing, mine doesn't either but it is looking better.

the original photo appears to have "photoshop-ness" to it. Ive really only seen one favia change from green eyes to yellow and that is the "babys breath favia." When i received my frag from my LFS the eye was green and as it fully healed over it changed to the amazing colors it produces. Anyone else know of any other favia that change while they heal over?
