Emperor has been raised from juvenile to almost full adult for the past 2 years. I thought the discolorations were just the color change but I am more concerned now since it looks blotchy and there seems to be more. I haven't noticed any flashing or scratching. All of my fish go through a QT process which includes 2 rounds of Prazipro. There was a coco worm which was added 6 months ago from a tank which was preparing to be treated with Prazipro and had known flukes. I suspect it may have came from the worm. Please advise.

Can you get him out long enough to perform a FW dip to confirm flukes (see below)?

Freshwater Dip: Provides temporary relief for Brooklynella, Flukes, Marine Velvet disease (Amyloodinium); possibly even Ich & Uronema marinum (both unproven). Can be used to confirm the presence of Flukes.

How To Treat - Fill a bucket with RODI water, and use a heater to match the temperature to the water the fish is coming from. Aerate the water heavily for at least 30 minutes prior to doing the dip, then discontinue aeration while performing the dip. Fish aren’t overly pH sensitive for short durations like this, but you can squirt a little tank water into the dip just before the fish goes in to help bring it up.

Place the fish in the freshwater (FW) dip and observe closely. It is not unusual for them to freak out a little at first. Also, tangs are notorious for “playing dead” during a FW dip. The important thing is to watch their gills; they should be breathing heavily at all times during the dip. If breathing slows, it’s time to exit the dip. Dip the fish for no longer than 5 minutes. Multiple dips may be done, but it’s important to give your fish a day to recuperate in-between dips.

For flukes, use a dark (preferably black) bucket so you can see if tiny white worms fall out of the fish (especially out of the gills) at around the 3-4 minute mark. The worms will settle to the bottom, so you can use a flashlight to look for them there as well.

Pros - Provides temporary relief for a wide range of diseases in a chemical free environment. Can “buy you more time” until a proper treatment can be done.

Cons/Side Effects - Not a permanent “fix” for any disease, as FW dips are not potent enough to eradicate all of the parasites/worms afflicting the fish. Some fish can have an adverse reaction to a FW dip by appearing unable to maintain their equilibrium once returned to the aquarium. If this happens, hold the fish upright (using latex, nitrile or rubber gloves), and gently glide him through the water (to get saltwater flowing through the gills again). It is also a good idea to place the fish in an acclimation box until he appears “normal”.

You can treat with Prazipro in a DT for flukes.

I would be careful using the prazi in your DT. I did and while it didn't hurt my fish or inverts, it did cause my SPS to fade then start losing tissue. Just FYI- that was my experience.

Edit to say..... none of my other corals were harmed by it.. LPS, softies and zoas are all fine

I would also like to note its two pectoral fins have pieces missing at the tips. This is the meanest fish in the tank and extremely dominate. I have never seen any other fish nip at it.

Could be a bacterial infection setting in. This often happens as a sort of "secondary thing" when fish are afflicted by worms or parasites such as ich. The fish's immune system is already busy with the first thing, so dealing with a harmful strain of bacteria becomes too much.

I have read many successful results of in tank dosing Prazipro but this is the first issue of fading colors and tissue lost. My tank is SPS dominant and experienced some fading when dosing Tech M to kill bryopsis 6 months ago. I will research a bit more on others experiences.

Thank you.

I will dose Prazipro in the DT to make sure after a bit more research since I don't want to risk losing the fish or SPS. I am curious why my tangs are not showing any signs of parasites if it is indeed flukes.

no problem. I have pretty bad luck in general, so it probably wont happen to you, but i figured i would share my experience just in case.

Flukes are not as easily transmissible as external parasites like ich, because most of the time the life cycle takes place completely inside the fish. However, some eggs will inevitably fall out of the fish and hatch. When this happens, the larva only has 36 hrs to find a fish host or perish. And unlike parasite "free swimmers", flukes larva can only crawl onto their host so this makes it more difficult for them to find one.

I have a 215-gallon SPS dominant tank and prazipro was completely safe to use in it. The only thing it caused was the skimmer to go nuts but that was expected.

The directions say to turn off your skimmer because it will cause the prazi to be ineffective. But like i said.. i have bad luck. Rather that than no luck at all right? ;)

Yeah, I removed the cup and let it overflow back into the sump to keep the aeration the same in my tank.

Just when I thought I had a fool proof QT procedure in place there is always more to learn. I appreciate all the input and will update after a few rounds of treatment.

I dosed on Wednesday but there are fan worms still alive and thriving which makes me doubt the effectiveness of the 1st dose. I followed the directions on the Prazipro bottle for dosage. I have also heard of others dosing more. Should I dose again the recommended amount or more?

All of my feather dusters are still alive after my dose. They came out of this much better than my montis.

All of the SPS are fine and I have about 90+. The emperor still has scars which may take weeks to heal. It is still feeding and acting normal.

You need to dose again 1 week after the first dose. Do a 25% WC beforehand.
