Foxface dead after cleaning algae

Tank looks nice...Have you added anything recently? Also, I love open top tanks, but they have a draw back, you have to watch the nothing lingers in the tank...something in the air, pests, and unless you had physical soap on you hands, and you just got put of shower kinda puts you in a safe place for you hands being clean.

The tank is in my finished half of the basement. I'm the only one that is allowed to clean down there. The sump is on the other side of the wall in the unfinished side. The sump is open completely too. I've wondered about the washing machine down there, but many people run sumps in their basement and that sump has been there over a year.

I see you have palys and softies in your tank. any chance they were damaged while you were scraping the algae in your tank? Would loose pieces of algae landing on softies cause them to release chemical warfare? it's a long shot but worth asking.

Pretty sure this is NOT related to this incident at all (sorry for your loss) but just saw that your open sump is near your washer & dryer. Since I’m the only one that does the laundry at my house, it raised a few possible red flags you may not have considered if you aren’t the primary laundry guy.

1. If you are using any powdered detergents or additives (Oxiclean, Borax) they are fine grained, easily spilled and get everywhere.

2. Dryers make LOTS of lint. I clean out the dryer filter after each load and put it right in the trash bin. Somehow I still end up with “lint bunnies” all over the laundry room.

3. I’m sure you aren’t using aerosol air fresheners anywhere near your main DT, but is anyone using fabric stain remover sprays to pretreat laundry? I have no idea exactly what is in them, but it can’t be anything good for fish.

May want to consider a cover for the sump or maybe find a way to partition that section off with something as simple as the plastic sheeting you use to keep drywall dust from spreading.

We don't use anything in powder form and never spray anything in the basement. I have enforced that rule years ago. The sump is probably 10 feet from the washer and I've never really seen lint anywhere. I've been thinking about this more. My fox used to hide behind rocks, but wasn't really this time. I'm starting to think it was bacteria related and causing a lack of oxygen. Just another thought. The fish were fine before that cleaning. They all ate well and I don't think I had something toxic on my hands from the shower.
